Sur la table, a Seattle,Washington based privately held retailer of kitchen products will open at Phipps Plaza in the coming months. The store will open in space currently occupied by its chief rival, Williams-Sonoma, which is consolidating operations, leaving open their larger store at nearby Lenox Square.
Sur la table, French for "on the table" is the second largest kitchenware retailer in the nation, operating some 90 locations in 28 states. The first Sur la table opened in 1972 at Pike Place Market in Seattle, about a year after Starbucks opened their first location in the same market.
Sur la table has one other Atlanta area location in Dunwoody at Perimeter Mall. If memory serves, that location opened in 2008 and is located on the upper level near Macy's. A former employee of Bloomingdale's at Lenox myself, I recall my home store manager leaving Bloomingdale's to accept a managerial position with Sur la table.
Currently, plans are to have the store open in April, shortly after the planned opening of Legoland Discovery Center.

Interesting. I have to say, I'm excited for this. I love Willams-Sonoma, but like you said they have a much bigger store at Lenox that I prefer. I rarely shopped at the Phipps store because I always found it a bit small. Sur la Table, while similar, has a lot of different things and some more pocket friendly prices and it will be nice not to have to trek out to Dunwoody to shop there.
I think the Legoland Discovery Center is going to completely change the vibe of Phipps. I don't know if that's good or bad. On the one hand it's a shame that such a nice mall is always so quiet and doesn't get a lot of foot traffic (compared to Lenox across the street) but at the same time that's also the appeal of Phipps. It's quiet and makes for an enjoyable shopping experience. I'm just not sure that Legoland goes with the high end shoppers that Phipps generally attracts.
I'm glad to hear Sur la Table is coming to Phipps since Williams & Sonoma is leaving. I like both of the stores and shopped at the Phipps Williams & Sonoma. I used to go to Phipps for lunch and shopping a few times a week. Since they closed their food court I rarely go. I think they need to decide what they want to be. Upscale shopping or a childrens mall. Once Legoland opens I probably won't go there much. I think they have ruined the mall. Since Legoland is opening I think they should add stores like Build a Bear. Something that appeals to families.
