Bits & Bites

For the first time in recent memory, a new Church's Chicken is being built from the ground up in Georgia.  The new restaurant will open at the corner of Shorter Avenue and N. Hanks Street in Rome.  Just over a mile away, a new Cook-Out will open this month on Martha Berry Boulevard.

A new restaurant called Tierra Mexicana plans to open in place of Matador Cantina on Garrett Street in Glenwood Park.  Matador closed this past June.  I'm told Tierra's owners hope to have the restaurant open in "a couple months."

A new Floor & Decor is coming to McDonough.   The new store will be built as 1120 Towne Centre Village Drive and will mark the chain's fifth store in Georgia.  The chain also operates a Design Gallery adjacent to its original location on the northeast access road near R.E.I.  Floor & Decor started in Atlanta in 2000 and today has over 40 locations across a dozen states.

Family Dollar has finally opened its new location on Marietta Boulevard near Bolton Road.  The store relocated from a smaller, older space across the street, where it occupied a portion of the former Colonial grocery store at Moores Mill Village.

New Dunkin' Donuts locations are in the works for Newnan and Calhoun.  In Newnan, the new location will open at 3190 E. Hwy 34 and in Calhoun, a new Dunkin' Donuts will be built at  647 GA 53 East.  Canton, Massachusetts-based Dunkin' Donuts continues to expand in metro Atlanta and now into other smaller communities OTP.

The Bishop opened Tuesday in Avondale Estates.  The "classic American eatery" is currently open for dinner only, but owner Luellen Marshall says she hopes to offer brunch service by fall.

Chow Bing has added a second location. Owner Gary Lin, a native of Fujian, China, opened the first Chow Bing at the Pencil Factory Loft last year, and has now opened at the "Disco Kroger" shopping center on Piedmont Road in Buckhead.  Chow Bing is a fast-casual Asian eatery featuring "natural, sustainable and primarily gluten-free options."

The Mongram Shop is relocating from its current Lenox Square location to a new, as yet undisclosed, location.

After a number of closures that soon became re-openings, Goldberg's Bagel & Deli at Colony Square closed for good May 5.  I reported that the location was closed in mid-March, but eventually it reopened, only to close again and proceeded to repeat this sequence a few times. Now the restaurant has been verified closed and calls made to the location are met with a pre-recorded message telling callers that the number has been "changed."  The new number provided is the number to Goldberg's Group corporate office on Roswell Road.

A new BP is coming soon to Suwanee.  The new gas station and convenience store will be built at the corner of Old Peachtree Road and Satellite Boulevard on land that is currently vacant.

Buckhead Atlanta announced a number of tenants for their project including Theory, Jimmy Choo and Bella Bag.  Theory, owned by Japan's Fast Retailing, previously operated a store at Phipps Plaza, but it closed in early 2012. The new Theory store will be about 2,500 square feet and will be located on Bolling Way.   Jimmy Choo, long rumored to be on the move to Buckhead Atlanta, will in fact relocate from their current first floor location at Phipps Plaza to the new project.   The new Jimmy Choo will be about 2200 square feet and will be located on Buckhead Avenue.   Most interesting to me was the announcement that Bella Bag, an Atlanta-based designer handbag and accessory consignment business, would open a roughly 1200 square foot boutique on Peachtree Road at Buckhead Atlanta.  Bella Bag's existing showroom and store is located less than two miles away at Miami Circle.  The move to Buckhead Atlanta clearly represents an increase in visibility, but undoubtedly an increase in rent.

Limited Brands will soon renovate their existing Bath & Body Works store at North Point Mall and add a new location of White Barn. White Barn will carry candles and fragrances and the North Point Mall location will be among the chain's first new stores in the country.  The chain existed previously as "White Barn Candle Co." but this new store seems to reflect a tweaked branding image and an updated layout.  White Barn will be carved out of the existing 5200 square foot Bath & Body Works.  When the two stores reopen late this summer, the Bath & Body Works will be about 3200 square feet, with White Barn being about 2000.

Nick & Steven Carse, founders of King of Pops, have purchased the 66-acre farm "Daniell's Nursery" in Douglas county.  The farm has been around since 1970 and was a family business.  The brothers Carse plan to use the land to grow fresh produce, Christmas trees, and host various farm-to-table events.  In the winter, when the sales of popsicles declined, the brothers launched a side venture, Tree Elves. Tree Elves was launched during the 2012 holiday season and grows Christmas trees, delivers them, then picks them up and replants them to be made available to the same client the following year.

Arepa Mia, currently with one location in the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, plans to add a second location next month in Decatur.  The restaurant announced their second location via their Facebook page last week, but did not disclose a location.

After what some may have felt like what an eternity under renovation,  Elmyriachi opened this past weekend on Hosea L. Williams Drive in Kirkwood.   Elmyriachi is the sibling restaurant to Elmyr of Little Five Points.  Elmyriachi has a patio that has already proved popular and occupies a former Mrs. Winner's.

A new coffee shop and clothing gallery called Henry & June plans to open later this summer at 784 North Highland Avenue.  The shop is adjacent to Bill Hallman and actually occupies what was once Bill Hallman's women's boutique.

The old KFC building that was located on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs was torn down this week and it looks like the owners are looking to combine that lot with the lot next door. Any word on what may be going in there?

@Chris,

I believe that will be a bank. Very exciting, I know.

Thanks for your comments and readership.

@Billy,

I believe the plan there is to "go vertical" with some sort of office building. I wish em luck! (traffic is only getting worse in that area.)

Thanks as always for your comments and readership!

Any idea on what's happening down on the terrace level sidewalk shops at Lenox where the Monogram Shop is currently located? Isn't most everything moving out of there?

The bath and body works at NP used to have half of the store split with it's own entrance to house the candles. Or they may still. Don't get over there often. Anyone know?
