Bits & Bites

Pollo Tropical plans to build a new freestanding restaurant in an outparcel of Brookwood Square in Austell.  The new 4000 square foot restaurant will be built  close to the former Home Depot, along the East-West Connector.  The former Home Depot space will reportedly be split into two spaces. An LA Fitness is "proposed" for a 45,000 square foot portion of the roughly 70,000 square foot space.  Pollo Tropical already has five locations open in Georgia with an additional location under construction in Johns Creek.

Burger King plans to open a new restaurant on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway.  The new Burger King will replace a Shell gas station, just inside 285 in west Atlanta.

Keegan's Irish Pub coming to Smyrna/Vinings in the former Blackstone restaurant on South Atlanta Road. Keegan's has two other existing locations on Ridenour Boulevard in Kennesaw and on Shallowford Road in East Cobb. Plans call for the new location to open in late September or early October.

According to a business license filed with the city of Atlanta yesterday, Shaun Doty's upcoming Lenox Square restaurant may be getting closer to opening.  "Lenox Green Hen, LLC" dba Bantam & Biddy will have a patio and should open the first week of October.

The Real FIX Pizzeria, previously announced to be opening August 26th, has been delayed again. Given the recent setbacks, management has elected not to announce a planned opening date.

Applebee's plans to open a new location in Bethlehem.  The new freestanding Applebees will open on Carl-Bethlehem Road (State Route 324) in previously undeveloped land.  The restaurant is being opened by Neighborhood Restaurant Partners, LLC.

Altar'd State has opened a new store near Hollister on the first floor of Mall of Georgia in Buford.  The Altar'd State store replaced two smaller stores that closed or relocated elsewhere within the mall.  Knoxville, Tennessee-based Altar'd State operates over 30 stores around the southeast including stores in Marietta and Cumming.

Walmart plans to open a new Walmart Express at 907 Marianna Highway in Donalsonville, in southwest Georgia.

KRISPY KREME has cleared land on Wesley Chapel Rd in Decatur. Plans call for a new restaurant. A new Kroger fuel center is also being bit on Wesley Chapel at a very old aging Kroger.

I grew up in (and fairly recently moved away from) that Wesley Chapel Road area. I'm glad to see some development going up in the old 'hood. That Kroger gas station is in the place of where a Sizzler used to be way back when. I've always thought it'd be nice to build a new Kroger where the old K-Mart is and then gut the current Kroger and replace it with an LA Fitness or something of the like. Give the Planet Fitness across the street some competition. They're also (supposedly) building a second McDonald's on the land where the long-closed Hardee's used to be and that vacant lot at the corner of WC and Snapfinger Woods is going to (again, supposedly) become a new RaceTrac

Pollo Tropical plans to build in Snellville at the corner of Scenic Hwy 124 and Dogwood Rd. Krispy Kreme also has plans on this same site, where a former bank has set vacant for a while.

Denny's is building in Snellville as well at the corner of Scenic Hwy 124 and Wisteria.

Anybody know anything about the new mexican place that's supposed to be opening in Decatur? Sign on Ponce says "Dos Madres Cantina", opening Fall 2014.

Anyone hear about the Old Hickory House in Dunwoody closing? Seems to be conflicting stories on the Dunwoody Reporter and Atlanta Business Chronicle. Place was always jammed full on Sundays after church....

@Anon RE: Old Hickory House,

The restaurant is closed for good. The Atlanta Business Chronicle was wrong to have suggested it may reopen as it had just a day prior said it was closed for good. These days it's commonplace to say "closed for renovations" when you are instead closed for good.

Thanks for your comments and readership.

That sucks about the Hickory House. Any idea why they closed? Is anything planned for the spot? I would think that it is a prime location. very visible. Also why are places using the closed for renovations phrase instead of just saying closed for good?
