What Happened to the Real Mandarin House in Sandy Springs?

Longtime Asian restaurant shutters in Sandy Springs.

The Real Mandarin House, a casual restaurant serving traditional Chinese & Vietnamese cuisine in Sandy Springs, has closed.  The restaurant was located to the right of Trader Joe's in Sandy Springs Plaza on Roswell Road. The restaurant reportedly closed without warning over a month ago.  The 4,500 square foot space is currently listed as available by property owner Regency Centers.

The Real Mandarin House had been a popular Sandy Springs restaurant since 1986.  More recently, the eatery seemed to have nosedived in quality and popularity with some pretty terrible Yelp reviews.

This past May, Kobe Steaks, also a Sandy Springs institution, closed at The Prado after nearly 40 years in business. Recently, Fujiyama, a restaurant similar to Kobe Steaks, opened in their space.

There as been a restaurant called Mandarin House at this location since long before 1986. (I'm not sure if it was called the "Real" Mandarin House then.) I remember going there as a child in the 1970s. I went to Mandarin House a couple of years ago and it was decent, with good service, but the place was almost empty.

Outside of the Chinese restaurants in the Buford Highway area, metro Atlanta seems to be lacking in quality Chinese restaurants. We have excellent Thai and Vietnamese restaurants but most of the Chinese restaurants are mediocre at best.

I used to go there all the time in the 80's and 90's... as a kid growing up in Sandy Springs. It was our family go-to chinese place.

I'm not surprised it shut down though. I was there a couple years ago and the quality went way down hill.

Regardless, thanks for the information. I'm going to share it with my parents- it will undoubtedly give them a smile to think about this place and all the times we went there as a family.

It was owned by the same family the whole time. Two brothers at first in the 70s. I ate there on the first day they opened. The lady that has owned most recently has cut corners on the food. Very sad day.

I believe the brothers opened a Bistro on Windward Parkway about 10 years ago. I went to the old Mandarin House when I was in my teens in the 70s. Love their Mongolian beef and the best hot and sour soup I have had. I got my fix at the Windward Restaurant until they sold it as well. Wish they would do another one.
