572 Wants Everyone in the District to Experience Upscale Dining in Tucker

New restaurant coming to downtown Tucker

Jason Hylton and James Maggard, owners of The Local No. 7 in downtown Tucker plan to open a new restaurant later this summer.  Slated to be called "572," the new, more upscale eatery will occupy the former Sweet Dee's Bakeshop on Main Street, a door down from Local 7.

Sweet Dee's opened in 2012 and closed this past December after its owner reportedly got a job offer too "sweet" to pass up.

The area that would become Tucker was known as "Militia District 572" in 1821, which inspired the restaurant name. The State created DeKalb County on December 9, 1822 and Militia District 572 became DeKalb’s 18th District.

The Local No. 7 gets its name "the significance of the number 7 and history of Tucker. Tucker is 7 miles from Atlanta, Stone Mountain, Decatur, Chamblee, Doraville, and Lilburn; at one time had 7 churches; 7 high schools within 7 miles of Tucker, and Tucker was laid out in 1907. All of this made it obvious that we had to name our restaurant with number "7". And what better drink to go with number 7 than whiskey, so we offer a wide variety of whiskey's to go with our great burgers. The "Local" relates to the local railroad which thirty feet from our door."

The owners of The Local 7 are partnering with restaurant veteran Jonathan Allen to open the new restaurant. Allen spent over five years with Rathbun's and Krog Bar acting as Chef de Cuisine / Beverage Manager / Restaurant Manager.

572 will reportedly feature a more upscale environment and menu than that of Local 7, or any other Tucker restaurant for that matter.  The menu will emphasize locally sourced items but a spokesperson with whom I spoke made sure to mention it won't be a run of the mill "farm to table" establishment.

Jason Hylton and James Maggard also operate Matador Cantina in Oakhurst.  A second Matador previously operated in Glenwood Park, but closed in 2013.  The Local No. 7 opened in late 2011.

Plans call for the 572 to open in late July or early August.

Cool! I hope it's good: there is absolutely nothing in the way of "upscale" dining in Tucker. Right now the nicest place in the immediate area is...sorry, couldn't think of anything.

I'm kind of skeptical that it will all work out, but good luck to them.

I've long thought that some of the land just east of main street (currently filled with an assortment of ugly little offices) could be used for upscale apartments.

But there is still the issue that this is not a 'hi rent' ITP area.

I’ve eaten at the Local No. 7 and found it decent and a nice addition to Main Street Tucker. I’m also not surprised at all that the significantly overpriced Sweet Dee’s closed.

Now, obviously the success of 572 depends on how they define “upscale” but I think they need to walk a fine line. I do believe people would like to see something a little more upscale than the local burger joints, cafeterias and Mexican restaurants. However, I’m not sure there are enough folks willing to pay $50 a plate for some gimmicky free range/farm-to-table small plates. Tucker is less “hipster” and more a combination of families and mature couples, but there are people willing to spend a little more for a nice meal they just need to remember Tucker isn’t the Old Fourth Ward.

It will be. I loved going to Krog Bar after work and sitting having small bites and wine! John's a great guy and an amazing chef

The women of Tucker (me especially) would appreciate a better wine list than what is offered currently in the local area. Right now our best bet is Marlowe's and that is ho-hum at best. I would love to see some good, affordable wines by the bottle ($30-$40 range).

I would LOVE a place where I could have a date night with my Husband. I try to eat healthy so I would love a place that serves grass-fed beef, wild fish and organic chicken. We have Matthews for southern food as well as Blue Ribbon. Bar food at Local 7 and Moonshadow. Mexican food everywhere, and fast food abundance. The only healthy place we have close is Sprig. (I'm over Jason's Deli) Looking for comfortable, easy menu, good for ya...decent prices, nice dining experience.

Sadly this will likely fail along with the other attempts to bring Tucker up to Decatur standards. My neighbors love to wish but in reality they don't have the money or the palate to support better food choices. They DO love and support mediocre food like Matthews, Enzos, and even Los Colinas, which is bland mex at its worst. Hey, everyone's gotta eat and we all have different ideas of good...but the fact is, once this place has been forced to add sports TVs and dumb down their menu for the masses like the other places have, those of us who like more refined dining now and then will continue to drive over into Decatur and Atlanta. I wish them luck though.

Matthews? Mediocre food? Wow ...

I like the idea of a nice place in Tucker. Too often we find ourselves driving to Decatur, Inman Park, or buckhead for better dining. I think some might be surprised how many people in Tucker have the money and the palate for better food choices.

I wish them fortune and fame and want to say thank you for believing in Tucker!

Why do people have to sling such insults about the residents of Tucker? No, we're not "hi rent" (assuming the commenter meant "high" and not "hello") because we don't rent. We own. Who care what standards are used to decide if a restaurant is "upscale" or not. Who cares what you want to label it, if it is good food, there will be support for it. Local 7 has done very well, so this new venture will be a great addition to Main Street.

Please tell me they're adding a parking garage out back! We're fans of Local 7 but have to go elsewhere often just because parking is impossible to find and that makes us sad.

Mel, When you can't park at Local 7 just park across the street next to the RR tracks. There is always parking there.
