Dale Murphy Opening New Restaurant, Murph's

Former Braves player enters restaurant business.

7 time All-Star, 2 time National League MVP and Atlanta Braves Hall of Famer Dale Murphy will open his namesake restaurant, Murph's, next month. Opening in place of Buckhead Pizza Co. at the Cobb Galleria, Murph's will feature a selection of classic American favorites like burgers and wings, as well as a full bar.

Murphy, along with a couple of partners, were quick to snap up the former pizza joint given its proximity to SunTrust Park, the new home of the Atlanta Braves. Buckhead Pizza Co. closed last month and is now down to just one location, off Peachtree Road in Buckhead.

A devout Mormon, Murphy was often lauded for his exemplary behavior and ethics. Murphy began his playing career with the Atlanta Braves in 1976, and played his first 15 seasons with the Braves.  He was traded to the Phillies in 1990 before joining the then newly added Colorado Rockies in 1993.  He retired from baseball following his stint in Colorado. Dale Murphy's #3 was retired by the Atlanta Braves in 1994.

In 2005, he started a non-profit organization called the iWontCheat Foundation to promote ethical behavior, and deter steroid use and cheating in youth sports.

Murph's, featuring a menu similar in some ways to Galleria neighbor Jocks & Jills, will surely hope to appeal to families and Braves fans looking for something different, but still approachable, in the area.

Sources say the restaurant will feature table service and be open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week.  Additionally, while 61 year old Murphy has no restaurant experience, his partners reportedly both have restaurant backgrounds.

For those wishing to follow the restaurant's progress and stay up on events and promotions, Murph's has launched profiles on facebook, Instagram and Twitter, all under the @eatatmurphs handle.   The restaurant has also launched a website

Are you excited about the opening of Murph's?  Will you go to Murph's instead other similar options because of Dale Murphy's involvement?  What is your favorite new or existing restaurant near Akers Mill, Cumberland Mall, The Battery Atlanta and the surrounding area?

Please share your thoughts below.

Best of luck to the Murph but horrible site. Can you operate a restaurant based on 81 days a year of customers? Who are these partners giving him such bad advice?

I will drive from Tulsa to try it for sure!

LOVE Dale... hate the idea though. I wouldn't want him to sully his reputation by opening this concept. Kinda close proximity to Suntrust Park, sure, but how difficult will it be to get people to pass by all the other restaurants RIGHT THERE IN THE BATTERY to walk across 285 to go to this one?

I think there is parking at the Galleria for the Braves games. So the thought is you can park, eat, and then walk over the pedestrian bridge to the game. Not the best idea.

Any issues with the fact that Murphy's is a long standing and loved Virginia Highlands restaurant owned by Tom Murphy. Name confusion, possibly? Just a thought.

Really? Name confusion? SMH

I think it is great! I have always been a big Dale Murphy fan and will certainly try it - mainly because of his involvement.

I think the location is great, since it is so close to SunTrust Park. I wish him lots of success.
