Bits & Bites [Atlanta Commercial Real Estate News]

The Wendy's restaurant at 8455 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs is expected to reopen next week.  The restaurant, which has been closed since a January 2014 fire, was reportedly plagued by delays related to the insurance coverage.  The franchisee of the Sandy Springs Wendy's, PAP Enterprises, owns four other metro Atlanta Wendy's restaurants including one on South Cobb Drive at Windy Hill Road in Smyrna.
Macy's plans to open a new Macy's Backstage outlet store within the Macy's at Northlake Mall August 19.  The off-price division that the struggling retailer has been expanding across the country currently has Atlanta locations within Macy's stores in Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth, Town Center at Cobb in Kennesaw, Cumberland Mall near Smyrna, and in Southlake Mall in Morrow.

Shami Kitchen is now open in the Kroger anchored Northridge shopping center on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.  The new fast casual Mediterranean eatery occupies a 3,150 square foot space between Barnacles Sports Bar & Grill and Dollar Tree.   The word “Shami” translates to “native of Damascus”—true of both Shami Kitchen’s founder, Abe Malla, and Executive Chef Abud Halabi. Malla is also the founder of  Westside Market, a popular home furnishings store with one location on Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard and a second planned for Toco Hills later this year.  Molla plans to open additional locations of Shami Kitchen in coming years. (Pro tip: Shami is only open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, something I discovered this past Sunday when I tried going for dinner)

Taco Bell plans to renovate their existing restaurant on South Cobb Drive at I-285 in Smyrna.

Fifth Group has finally started work on their upcoming Ecco restaurant at Phipps Plaza.  The restaurant, planned for a small piece of land near the corner of Wieuca and Peachtree Roads, was first announced in January 2016, and was at that time expected to open this summer.  Sources close to the project are now hopeful that the restaurant will open next summer.

Tiff's Treats will open its fifth Atlanta area location this coming Saturday at Decatur Crossing near the city of Decatur.  The new shop joins existing Atlanta area locations in Alpharetta, Midtown, Dunwoody, and near Vinings across from Cumberland MallA sixth location is expected to open early next year at the Hanover Buckhead Village apartment building at Roswell Road and Irby Avenue in Buckhead.

Kula Revolving Sushi has officially opened their first Atlanta are location in Doraville adjacent to BrandsMart USA and Super H Mart, just off Peachtree Boulevard and I-285.  I've been once and found the experience akin to bartaco with lots of small plates to try and an overall fun experience.  A restaurant representative indicated to me that while the company has no immediate plans for additional locations in metro Atlanta, the areas of Johns Creek and Duluth are being considered for when they do expand in a few years.

The Fresh Market will debut "an enhanced shopping experience" at their 11 Atlanta area locations starting August 9th. In celebration of the occasion, all Atlanta area stores will treat customers to assorted samples, free products, cooking demonstrations and live entertainment between Wednesday August 9th and Sunday August 13th.  A complete list of the calendar of events can be found here.

QuikTrip closed their convenience store and gas station at Shepherds Lane and Briarcliff Road near Sage Hill shopping center earlier this evening.  As ToNeTo Atlanta reported last month, QT plans to "scrape and rebuild" their existing convenience store and build a new, larger store on the same parcel that is growing slightly in size to accommodate the new store.  Sources say the new QT should open the week before Christmas.

Sources say that Sage Dental, a Piedmont Healthcare facility and a nail salon are the three tenants that will occupy the upcoming strip center in front of the Kroger at Toco Hill.

A new Bojangles' is planned for  US 29 near Hull Road (Highway 72) in Athens across the street from the relatively new Kroger Marketplace store.  The new roughly 4,000 square foot Bojangles', marked as a "10.0 Prototype," will likely feature many of the Charlotte, North Carolina-based biscuit maker's new elements such as a "biscuit theater" and an updated exterior appearance.  The new Bojangles' joins a new Wendy's and an upcoming O'Reilly Auto Parts as new businesses in the area.

A new Cook Out restaurant is planned for LaGrange.  The new restaurant, planned for 126 Commerce Avenue, would open on what is today a vacant lot.  The site is alongside fellow QSR (Quick Serve Restaurants) Chick-fil-A, Krystal and Captain D's and across from a Zaxby's.  Unlike other metro Atlanta Cook Out locations, the approximately 1,400 square foot LaGrange location will be a double-drive thru only, with no interior seating.   North Carolina based Cook Out currently has 32 locations open in Georgia with additional restaurants under construction in Hinesville, Cordele and Americus.

So all this fighting over the strip at Toco Hills will house 3 facilities that could have easily found already available retail space elsewhere in the area? What a waste...

That QT being closed for 5 months is a significant inconvenience for me - the only station I ever fill up at. It's sad that my life has come to this point where it can be so negatively impacted by a gas station closure.

The QT was insanely busy but also featured a ton of wasted space on the parcel. It was also getting kinda rundown from all the use, so probably net gain to do the work now.

What is taking so long for the new tenants to get going at where Famous Pub used to be?

Any update on this QwikTrip? It looks like it’s ready to open tomorrow.
