[EXCLUSIVE] Smokebelly BBQ to be Replaced by "Baja Mexican" Concept

Smokebelly BBQ plans to convert to an as yet unnamed "Baja Mexican" concept early this spring.  The barbecue eatery, which opened in June 2014, is located at 128 East Andrews Drive in Buckhead's West Village.  Smokebelly, which was previously expected to close this coming Sunday, February 4th after the Super Bowl, instead closed this past Sunday, January 28th.

Plans are underway for Southern Proper Hospitality, which owns Smokebelly, to reopen it elsewhere in the future.

ToNeTo Atlanta was exclusively provided the following statement regarding the conversion:

After three years in Buckhead, Southern Proper Hospitality (SPH) is looking to relocate Smokebelly.  SPH will be opening an authentic Baja Mexican concept in the space early spring. The Blind Pig Parlour Bar will remain open, with operating hours of Thursday-Saturday 8 pm - 3 am.” – Tory Bartlett, CEO of Southern Proper Hospitality.

In addition to Smokebelly, Southern Proper also owns the Tin Lizzy's chain, The Big Ketch Saltwater Grill (Buckhead & Roswell), Gypsy Kitchen, and The Southern Gentleman, The Blind Pig Parlour Bar, Beni's Cubano (East Cobb & Downtown) and Milton's Cuisine and Cocktails.

Will you miss Smokebelly in Buckhead?  Are you excited about the new Baja Mexican concept?  Where would you like to see Smokebelly reopen?

Smokebelly was special when it opened. It had a BBQ sauce "bar" with 9 or 10 flavors of sauce. It also featured a Coca-Cola cake for dessert. When we visited in 2017 the sauce bar and the cake were gone so we never returned. There are a lot of places in Atlanta with good BBQ meats. If you want to attract people from out of the neighborhood, you really need to provide something special.

This closure does not surprise me. There are too many good BBQ places to add in another one that's attempting to be a "high end" BBQ place IMO.

Buckhead doesn't need more Mexican options

I agree, KER. There's no need for more hipster BBQ places. Find one with a real pit master and it's all you need.

Oh yay another overpriced taco stand! Let's find a mattress firm around the corner and eat in bed!
