Bits & Bites

Atlanta's first location of Grand Lux Cafe is slated to open in August according to an announcement on the Phipps Plaza website.  The restaurant, located on the mall's second floor overlooking Peachtree Road, is the upscale sibling concept of Calabasas, California-based The Cheesecake Factory which operates a location at neighboring Lenox Square.

Little Alley Steak finally opened this past Monday, May 28 at One Alliance Center in Buckhead.  ToNeTo Atlanta was first to break news of the restaurant's planned opening during the summer of 2016

Phoenix-based restaurant Flower Child, the baby sister of True Food Kitchen, now claims they will open their new location at Shops Around Lenox Sunday, June 24th.  A second Atlanta area Flower Child is planned for City Springs in Sandy Springs later this summer/early fall.

A new location of McAlister's Deli is coming to Paulding County on Wendy Bagwell Parkway in Hiram.

A new Home2 Suites is planned for Jekyll Island.  The hotel, an extended stay brand within the Hilton Hotels family, will be located at 101 Ocean Way and will be about 70,000 square feet with 107 rooms.  The Jekyll hotel will be the brand's 15th in Georgia.  Current Atlanta area Home2 Suites properties in Georgia include those in Downtown and Norcross as well as one coming to a converted Comfort Suites on Peachtree Dunwoody Road in Sandy Springs.  The brand, which is based in Memphis, launched in 2009 and today has about 260 properties nationwide and a handful in Canada.

The AJC reports that Himalayas Indian Restaurant in Chamblee Plaza, which closed December 31, 2017 after more than 25 years in business, reopened earlier this month at 5336 Peachtree Road in downtown Chamblee.  The new Himalayas occupies the former Union Hill Kitchen which closed this past December after about four years in business.

Los Angeles-based The Sweat Shoppe, an indoor cycling studio, will open their first Atlanta area location location in the coming weeks in Lenox Square.  Sweat Shoppe will open within the Forum Athletic Club in space previously home to CYC, another indoor cycling studio.  CYC, based in New York, opened within the Forum in 2015 but closed by the end of 2016.

Tabi Sushi is now open in the former Smoke + Duck Sauce on North Decatur Road in Suburban Plaza.

Brokerage firm Charles Schwab is relocating from Colony Square to 1075 Peachtree Street,  adjacent to the Loews Atlanta Hotel.

The newest Taqueria Tsunami opened this past Tuesday, May 29th on Johnson Ferry Road in East Cobb.  The restaurant occupies a onetime Einstein Bros. Bagels/Caribou Coffee location that had sat vacant for a number of years.  East Cobb marks the locally based chain's eighth overall location, joining existing restaurants in Athens, downtown Athens, Marietta, Roswell, Sandy Springs, Woodstock and Simpsonville, KY.

City Barbeque plans to open their new Johns Creek/Suwanee location Monday, June 25 in Johns Creek Town Center in Suwanee.  As we reported last September, the new barbeque restaurant is opening in place of a former Applebee's that closed last May.  The Dublin, Ohio-based barbeque chain opened their first Atlanta area location last September at Decatur Crossing near Decatur.

Clean Eatz, a new-to-market healthy eatery, has plans for at least two more Atlanta area locations after opening their first in metro Atlanta on Windward Parkway in Alpharetta last April.  The Clean Eatz website indicates there are new locations "coming soon" to both Buckhead and Kennesaw but no specific location is provided and those may just be areas in which they are looking to expand, rather than reflective of signed leases.

Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen finally opened its highly anticipated location on Duluth Highway near Sugarloaf Mills in Lawrenceville.  The restaurant, which ToNeTo Atlanta first announced in early 2016, marks the Houston-based chain's fourth Pappadeaux in metro Atlanta and fifth overall restaurant in metro Atlanta for owner Pappas Restaurants which also operates Pappasito's Cantina on Windy Hill Road near SunTrust Park.

After months of delays (some of which were reportedly due to the last minute replacement of the restaurant's chef), Tamsung Thai Street Eats finally opened Thursday afternoon on Roswell Road in Buckhead.  The restaurant, located at 3226 Roswell Road in the Buckhead Village, serves lunch and dinner and is thus far only open Tuesday-Saturday with a break in service from 3-5pm.

They sure are opening a lot of the Taqueria Tsunami locations, quickly. Every time I have tried them, i just am not encouraged to go back. I always feel like I paid a lot for just ok food.

@Anon RE: Chopt,

I noticed that too! I have inquired with them via social media and they say "soon" and that there will be signage on the restaurant announcing the opening.

Thanks for your comments and readership!

An extended stay motel for Jekyll? Wow, didn't know they had that many meth-heads down there.

Meh. I think Simon took the path of least resistance on this one. GLC is OK, but they can do better.

Hope Himalayas has upped their game in the new location. Customer for many years but food quality dropped off as they were ending their old lease. The new space is in a great location, I hope they do well.

Grand Luxe is a fantastic tenant.
They will be one of the top 10 grossing restaurants in metro Atlanta.

Re: GLC - Simon did the right thing. Whether the poster who says it's the "path of least resistance" ever visits GLC or not, I bet it will be mobbed. Think Houston's. It's a "higher end" American chain with consistent (albeit maybe not exciting and innovative) food. I'm not insulting Atlantans by saying that's what Atlantans like. It'll do better than many of the "farm-to-table" (ugh, hate that phrase) restaurants that have been popping up everywhere.
