Bits & Bites

IHOP teased Tuesday that it is renaming itself IHOB, with an official explanation expected Monday, June 11.  International House Of "Breakfast" could reflect the restaurant's offering of not just pancakes, but a wider variety of breakfast options.
Bad Daddy's Burger Bar opened their second Atlanta area restaurant this past Monday, June 4 at Jonquil shopping center in Smyrna.  The approximately 3,500 square foot restaurant joins existing eateries Willy's Mexicana Grill and Newk's Eatery in the Publix anchored center at the corner of Atlanta and Spring Roads.  The first Atlanta area Bad Daddy's opened this past January at the new Parkview on Peachtree development on Peachtree Boulevard in Chamblee.  A third Bad Daddy's is planned for North Decatur Square at the corner of North Decatur Road and Church Street near Decatur.  The Denver-based chain reportedly has plans for at least one more location in metro Atlanta in the coming months.

Off-price retailer Burlington is replacing Shoppers World at Camp Creek Marketplace II on Camp Creek Parkway in East Point.  The 33,968 square foot space was originally occupied by Circuit City, but has been off-price retailer Shoppers World for the past few years.

London Trading Company is expanding their store in the Buckhead Village into the space previously occupied by Weathered.  In turn, Weathered now occupies the space in which London Trading Company was previously located, on Roswell Road near Chastain Square shopping center.

A new McAlister's Deli is planned for 2012 Eagle Drive in Woodstock

Designer Steven Alan plans to close his lone Atlanta store in the coming weeks as he grapples with sluggish sales that already led to the closure of over a dozen of his branded boutiques.  The Atlanta store, on Howell Mill Road in the Westside Provisions District, opened in 2013 and is located below Ford Fry's Marcel restaurant.  The designer behind the multi-brand boutique restructured his company last year, but is still struggling to stay the course in today's choppy and fickle retail world.  Alan announced plans to exit the wholesale business - in which Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus were clients - this past April.  At the height of its business, Steven Alan operated 26 stores across the U.S. and employed a staff of almost 200.  Currently, the company is down to just six stores and a staff of only 20, including those who work at the corporate office and in its retail units.  The stores that remain open are in TriBeCa, Chelsea, Brooklyn (with separate men's and women's stores), the Upper West Side and Atlanta.  A store in Boston closed a few weeks ago.  Steven Alan would be just the latest in a string of retail closures at the popular Westside development.  Jack Spade closed in early 2015, while Jonathan Adler "moved" to The Shops Buckhead Atlanta later that same year and closed in Buckhead last monthJ.Crew closed this past January in the Westside Provisions District, while a previously announced Club Monaco never opened.

The former Dollar Tree in Shallowford Corners shopping center in East Cobb will soon reopen as a new furniture consignment store called Whiskey Creek Consignments.  The store, being opened by business partners Maralyn Morse and Amy Evitts, is slated to open late this summer.   Morse previously worked for Southern Comforts, another local furniture consignment store with four locations.  Dollar Tree closed last fall, largely due to their smaller than typical size, and lease restrictions on their offering of refrigerated items due to the Publix in their center.   Shallowford Corners is located at the corner of Shallowford and Johnson Ferry Roads.

A new Arby's is planned for Highway 92 (Cowan Road) & Baker Road in Acworth.   The new 2,400 square foot building will be constructed adjacent to an existing Shell & Dairy Queen.

Charlotte-based Asana Partners earlier this month purchased Morningside Village shopping center on North Highland Avenue.  The firm has been active in Atlanta in recent months having purchased Krog Street Market, Atlanta Stove Works and The Plaza on Ponce.  Morningside Village includes furniture and home accessories consignment shop The Wish List, as well as restaurants Whiskey Bird and Nowak's (formerly Morningside Kitchen), among other tenants.

North Point Mall's planned coworking office space will be operated by Spaces, new plans filed with the city of Alpharetta indicate.  ToNeTo Atlanta reported May 3 that North Point owner General Growth Properties (GGP), was proposing an interior renovation to convert vacant retail space to leasable office space consisting of both private offices and common areas for collaborative working.  At the time the operator of the co-working space wasn't identified.  Amsterdam based Spaces has existing metro Atlanta locations in Alpharetta at Avalon, The Battery Atlanta, Perimeter, Colony Square and Midtown East.  The proposed office space would be on the upper and lower floors of the mall, between Von Maur and AMC Theatres.  A total of 25,304 square feet of office space is proposed, of which 12,748 square feet would be on the lower level and 12,556 square feet would be on the upper level.  6,059 square feet of the proposed spaces is existing common area of the mall, including a children’s play area that would be moved to a new location within the mall.  The proposal is scheduled to go before the Alpharetta Planning Commission on June 7.

Newk's Eatery plans to open what will be its second location in Kennesaw at 745 Chastain Road in Madison Place at Chastain.  The new eatery will open in place of World of Beer which closed last summer.  The original Newk's in Kennesaw opened last year in the Whole Foods Market anchored Kennesaw Marketplace on Barrett and Cobb Parkways.

A new freestanding Dollar General is planned for 925 Shiloh Road in Kennesaw.

Ashley Furniture HomeStore plans to open in the former Gander Mountain in  McDonough.

Southern apparel and gift retailer Palmetto Moon plans to open a new store at Mall of Georgia in Buford.  The  7,500 square foot store, located on the lower level near Dick's Sporting Goods, will feature apparel from Patagonia, Columbia and Vineyard Vines, as well as regional brands such as Simply Southern, Southern Tide, Costa, Local Boy and many more.  The store has existing Atlanta area locations in the North Georgia Premium Outlets in Dawsonville, The Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta in Woodstock and Tanger Outlets in Pooler near Savannah.

Krystal plans to open a new freestanding restaurant on Jonesboro Road in Morrow

DePalma's Italian Cafe closed its location on Auburn Road in Dacula Tuesday, June 5.  The restaurant, located in the Veranda at Fort Daniel shopping center, opened October 23, 2016 in place of Dooley's Southern Stone Pizza Kitchen, which opened in early 2012, and closed in early 2015.  DePalma's remains open in three locations in Athens.

A new restaurant called Street Taco is coming soon to Berkeley Park between Fire Station 23 and Urban Tree Cidery at 1523 Howell Mill Road.  The restaurant, being opened by Jason Sherman, will offer a variety of tacos and more "using recipes passed down through families and generations."    Sherman said of the restaurant.  Street Taco will be quick-serve during lunch hours with a meal at less than $10.  Dinner will switch to full-service with bar counter service also available. Breakfast and brunch are planned for the future.  Street Taco will offer lounge chairs, patio tables and dog-friendly dining.

Irby's Tavern opened Wednesday evening in the former Meehan's Public House next to Al's Cafe Agora on East Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead.
