[Ahoy!] Captain D's Plans to Drop Anchor in Norcross

A new Captain D's Seafood Kitchen is being planned for Jimmy Carter Boulevard, just off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Norcross.  The new restaurant is slated to open alongside relatively new locations of both RaceTrac and Zaxby's, along with PetSuites of America.  The approximately 2,200 square foot restaurant will be built on a roughly .8 acre site.  The new Norcross Captain D's will be one of the first new build restaurants the Nashville-based company has built in metro Atlanta in the past decade or so.
Modern Day Captain D's

Once ubiquitous around metro Atlanta, Captain D's has closed dozens of locations around metro Atlanta and the south over the years, having only recently seen a resurgence of both popularity in the brand and franchise interest in new development.

Local resident Amin Alibhai of Alibhai Investments is opening the new Norcross Captain D's.

Over the years, Captain D's has changed hands a number of times.  Most recently it was purchased this past December by New York-based private equity firm Sentinel Capital Partners.  Sentinel added Captain D's to their stable of investments which include controlling stakes in other restaurant brands such as Newk's Eatery, Fazoli's and Huddle House, among others.

Launched in Donelson, Tennessee in 1969, the chain is today seen as the largest quick serve seafood chain restaurant in the nation, operating over 500 units in over 20 states.  In Georgia, the chain has over 100 units, most of which are in smaller, rural markets.

In recent years, the company has opened additional franchised locations in Georgia including restaurants in Rockmart, Kingsland, McDonough and Acworth, among other communities.  Although it once had many locations around metro Atlanta, the chain has only a few left such as the three it operates in Decatur and pair in Tucker.  Former Atlanta area Captain D's included those on Buford Highway in Brookhaven and on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.

Are you excited by the potential return of Captain D's to metro Atlanta?  What is your favorite quick serve seafood restaurant?  Where would you like to see Captain D's open next?

Interesting. I didn't know people really ate Captain D's anymore. If I remember right it is really just oil soaked fish.

Potential return to metro Atlanta? There's one right down the street from me in Smyrna on South Cobb drive. Also, over 20 percent of all Captain D's are in Georgia?

There used to be on in Douglasville off of Hwy 92 but they tore it down years ago to make way for a diamond interchange that never happened.

Wondering if anyone on here has eaten there fairly recently? When I was growing up we used to go to Long John Silver on Buford Hwy near Clairmont if I recall.

Last time I ate at Captain D's was in late August. I was in Tennessee visiting family. They had a Sunday buffet. It was a small buffet not like Golden corral. Since the restaurant was packed (yes packed) the food was fresh - fish, hush puppy, cole slaw, fries, corn on the cobb, etc... Was all included. I can't remember the price. The restaurant was newly remodeled so everything was clean and in good shape. Staff was friendly. Better than I expected. Food was good for fast fish. Better than Long John silvers. In a world full of burger restaurants, this was a welcome surprise. I would go again to the one I visited.

Long JOhn Silvers is so much better but there aren't any around anymore and the ones that are are the most filty and disgusting places I've ever seen. I stopped at the one in Covington a few weeks ago and the walls and flooring was BLACK!

Captain D uses breaded shrimp versus batter and several other menu items are not as good. I dont understand really why people would prefer it unless they're looking for a poor mans fix for Pappeadeaux. Im not going to eat that many calories unless it's very very good.

LOL - the vast majority of JCB Pappadeaux's patrons cannot even afford Captain D's and/or Long John Silvers.

Yay about time BUT we need more, like one in Duluth. I love this place and have to drive over 5 miles to get to one. They ate so much better than Long John SilvetS and not at all greasy. Slaw, hush puppies and fried are delicious also. Build one on vacant closed Burger King at Buford Hwy. & Old Peachtree in Duluth GA.

Any idea when the Captain D's will open in Norcross? We've seen nothing since the initial announcement back in October 2018.
