Patel Brothers Planning Suwanee Store

Patel Brothers, an Indian oriented grocery store and market, plans to open a second Atlanta area location next year.  The new store, which will be located in the Johns Creek/Suwanee area of Forsyth County, would be built on currently vacant land near the intersection of Peachtree Parkway and Caliber Street.  Forsyth County planning and development documents indicate the parcel on which the store is planned is nearly 11.5 acres.
Hanover Park, Illinois-based Patel Brothers currently operates about 50 stores throughout 19 states including the company's original Atlanta area store on Church Street in Decatur.  The Decatur location, which occupies a former Kroger, has the center in which its located named for it: Patel Plaza.

Planning documents suggest the Suwanee store will be 35,000 square feet, significantly larger than the Decatur location.  Patel Brothers officials have told customers they plan to be open in Suwanee by spring 2018.

Patel Brothers started as a small neighborhood storefront in Chicago opened by two brothers, Mafat and Tulsi Patel, in 1974.  At the time, the Patels were recent immigrants from India, and had trouble finding the ingredients they craved from back home. Their shop sold the kinds of items you couldn’t get at your average grocery store like fresh spices, lentils, and chickpea flour — all imported from India.

While Kroger, Publix, Walmart and Whole Foods Market fight each other for business, Patel Brothers, Nam Dae Mun, H mart and others, have each carved out followings by catering to specific ethnic groups and their preferred foods.

The new Suwanee store will likely do extremely well given the large Indian population in the Alpharetta/Johns Creek/Suwanee area.

Have you ever been to Patel Brothers?  Where do you shop for ethnic grocery items?   If Patel Brothers opened a third location in Atlanta, where should it be?

Please share your thoughts below.

  2. @Anon 8:24 - what is your problem with Indian Food? I'm tired of this backward sentiment. This means more competition, variety and an introduction to additional cultures and flavors. I see nothing negative about it and I welcome Patel Brothers' expansion.

  6. I second the "gross" sentiment. Where I live, we're getting inundated with Indians and Indian shops. I feel like I'm in another country and I don't like the feeling.

... so you don't like the 1st amendment unless it is politically correct and doesn't hurt your feelings?

LOL most Indians (Asian) don't like each other anyway unless they are from the proper caste.

  20. So pathetic. Just some news about an Indian grocery store opening delves into political fight between sickos on either side. The looney tune LIBERAL LEFT and HARD CORE RIGHT. Get over it! Indians don't care about your political views on India or Indian food.

  21. @ 9:40 AM Agree!! Indian Americans just want your money, if you choose to be a customer, as their stores and restaurants are built to serve them not US.

  22. Haha the eneterance from Laurel springs Country club will run into Patel Plaza go look at the one in decatur first and tell if you want to live next too. Property price will plumit and the only people really to buy your house is the Indians as they don't care where they live as long as schools are great

    ReplyDelete
  23. I for one don't mind the Indians.....most of them mind their own business and don't cause any trouble and the kids study so the school scores in the neighborhood actually get better.

  24. when is "patel brothers" opening at forsyth county?

    ReplyDelete
  25. OMG!!! So many butthurts...if you have so much problem with Indians why come and comment on the first place? It is a general grocery store and the area would see increased activities from indians, that's all about it. Why make noise about that. Don't like it? Don't visit the place, as simple a that.

And about school, yes what I see is Indians are immensely concerned about education and that is a good thing. Due to them several low graded schools have started getting good scores. More or less any Highly ranked schools would have majority Asian kids in general. what is wrong in buying house near good schools?

    Snowflakes....

  26. for the racists ...Remember, your great grand dad or great grandma were immigrants too and they probably were not lucky enough to experience different cultures like we do today. Embrace other cultures and other food..aren't your tired of eating lasagna and meat balls 4 times a week? LOL.

  27. US has had many different foods before India Indians came.

Native foods of cornbread and so on. Jams and Jellies made of American fruit.
