[EXCLUSIVE] Whataburger Cashes in on Former Bank in Cumming

ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively announced in August that we had identified that the first Atlanta area Whataburger restaurant is slated for Kennesaw.  We are now pleased to share that a second Whataburger is planned for Cumming, with a third in the pipeline for another OTP locale which we will reveal shortly.

The new Cumming restaurant will open in an outparcel of the Belk and Sprouts Farmers Market-anchored Lakeland Plaza shopping center just off exit 14 of GA-400.  The new Whataburger will replace a SunTrust bank branch which closed several months ago as Truist began to shed overlapping or duplicative BB&T and SunTrust branches.

The new Whataburger will be built from the ground up at 503 Lakeland Plaza.  Planning documents, which don't name Whataburger as the intended business, indicate that plans call for a 3,198 square foot building to be constructed on the .84 acre parcel.  David Blass, founding member and managing partner with Atlanta-based real estate firm Trilogy Group, submitted a request to the Forsyth County Planning Commission for a conditional-use permit to conduct "around-the-clock business" at the property that will also provide for 33 parking spaces.

Despite not being named specifically, several clues coupled with a ToNeTo Atlanta source, all point to Whataburger.

The new restaurant is seeking to operate "around-the-clock." Basically all standard Whataburger restaurants operate 24 hours a day.

The new restaurant will be 3,198 square feet on a .84 acre parcel.  Whataburger filed plans for a 3,198 square foot restaurant on a .81 acre parcel in St. Augustine, Florida earlier this year.

A real estate source with knowledge of the chain's Atlanta expansion confirmed to ToNeTo Atlanta that they are planning to open on the former bank site.

The new Whataburger would join existing fast food eateries in the area including Wendy's, Arby's, McDonald's, Chick-fil-A, Captain D's, KFC, Taco Bell and Krystal, among others.

While it will be several months before anyone in metro Atlanta can enjoy anything from the Whataburger menu, the company has partnered with cooler maker Igloo to offer a limited edition 16 quart “Whatacooler” that might be the perfect holiday gift for the Whataburger fan in your life.

Where would you like to see Whataburger open in metro Atlanta?  If you have been to Whataburger, what is your favorite menu item?  What regional chain would you like most to see enter metro Atlanta?

Please share your thoughts below.

  3. Where would I like to see Whataburger open in metro Atlanta? Somewhere at least within a few miles of the perimeter if not inside it. I rarely have any reason to visit Kennesaw or Cumming, and fast food is not enough of a reason to drive that far.

  6. Newnan!!!! Newnan had diversified greatly & had become the "it" spot south of Atlanta. A lot of West coast people including Hollywood production people have moved here b/c of all the shooting done here and Culver's & Freddy's doesn't hit the spot & can't compete to Whataburger!!!

  15. It is astounding, if not a little bit pathetic that a fast food "restaurant" generates such a multitude of comments on this blog.

  16. Please build one off GA 400, exit 11 (Windward Pkwy} or Exit 12 (McFarland). My favorite items are the burgers with jalapenos, onion rings, and the lemon or apple pies.

  17. I am SO excited to see Whataburger emerging from this market! We are in Alpharetta, and I will gladly drive up to exit 14 for Whataburger. The closest one to us now is Auburn, so we will be thrilled to have one within 10 miles of our house. Would love one in Alpharetta/.Milton area.
