[EXCLUSIVE] Wawa Zeros in on First Georgia Location

Wawa, the popular chain of convenience stores and gas stations which announced plans this past October to enter the Georgia market, seems to have secured its first location in the state.  Newly released planning documents indicate a new Wawa is planned for 1810 S. Georgia Parkway W in Waycross, about four hours south of Atlanta and about ninety minutes north of Jacksonville.  The property Wawa would occupy is currently home to Cavagnaro's, a local steak and seafood restaurant.

According to the documents, the new Wawa convenience store would be about 5,500 square feet with 16 fueling spaces on a roughly 2.29 acre parcel.  By these metrics, this new Wawa would be comparable in size and fuel offerings to that of a typical RaceTrac or QuikTrip.  Buc-ee's however, the Texas-based chain which entered the Georgia market in late 2020, operates "superstores," and their Warner Robins location spans 53,000 square feet and includes 116 fueling spaces on 22 acres.

Wawa, a pioneer in convenience store food offerings, features a robust selection of made-to-order meals including breakfast, lunch and dinner selections.  The chain, based in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania in Greater Philadelphia, is perhaps most known for their hoagies but also offers cheesesteaks, deli sandwiches, salads, bowls and breakfast burritos, among other options.

In their release this past October, Wawa indicated its first Georgia store would open in 2024 with the potential for up to 20 additional stores in the market in the years to come.  The entrance into Georgia is expected to be centered on south and coastal Georgia with no metro Atlanta units yet.    The company also in 2022 announced plans to expand into the Florida Panhandle and south Alabama in 2024, Nashville in 2025 and Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky "sometime after 2025."

Earlier this month the company revealed the first eight of its Florida Panhandle/South Alabama stores including those planned for Pensacola, FL (2), Mobile, AL (2), Daphne, AL, Fairhope, AL (2), and Robertsdale, AL.

In Florida, a market Wawa entered in July 2012 with a location in Orlando near SeaWorld, the company expects to open another sixteen locations by this summer, including one in Boynton Beach that should open in the coming days and mark the chain's 250th unit in the state.  Wawa will likely open its 1,000th overall store later this year in one of its existing markets including those across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C.

Have you ever been to a Wawa?  What convenience store do you think offers the best food?  Where else in Georgia would you like to see Wawa open?

Please share your thoughts below.

  1. I'm from Philadelphia. Wawa is a step above anything in the Atlanta area. There's prepared food if you're in a hurry, and they offer made to order sandwiches, smoothies and salads. They have a more extensive dinner menu too after 4:00. The location make sense to me because they expanded heavily into Florida. I guess Atlanta is too far off their distribution lines right now, but I'm hoping that they move this way.

    4. Buckee's suck. I'm a truck driver but my money isnt good enough at a Buckee's store because trucks are not allowed.

    5. I live about an hour east of Waycross and a truck driver, so I totally agree. Bucky sucks. And I’m curious why they chose Waycross??? it’s not necessarily on anybody’s way to anything. they might have a larger population but their mean average income is a lot lower than Camden county or Glynn county in Georgia. on I-95 and they see a lot less travelers than Camden or Glenn experience on I 95. and as a local to Camden county, I would welcome a Wawa to my town as the closest alternative is still comparing apples to oranges in the area is Circle K with their new gross deli options and they are not good at all.

    6. Marietta Please!

    7. You must not be a real truck driver if you think Waycross doesn't have thru traffic. Waycross has 4 US Highways and is hub for transportation.

    8. You call yourself a truck driver? You are ignorant. South Georgia Parkway in Waycross is a hub for traffic. Stick to driving your truck and not business.

  3. Considering that they shut down all of their locations within the City of Philadelphia because the criminal element routinely destroying their stores, don't expect any locations in Atlanta.

  25. Being from Jersey originally, then Delaware, I always stop in when I’m back home to visit a Wawa! Good food and coffee! We need them on 75. If they are going to Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana , it’s just a shot down 75 to Atlanta. And when I’m in the Orlando area, yup, gotta go there too. Before we sold our trailer in WPB area, they were there too. And with the influx of us “Yankees,” it’s just a matter of time b4 they are here. Now, let’s get TD bank down here. They are in NC, SC, and Florida.

  35. WaWa is needed in Atlanta. Food “from a gas station” never tasted so good! Coffee is awesome too. Lived in Philly and Virginia. These places are awesome. Cheap gas and great food + coffee. Buc-ees is an interstate experience but WaWa is a weekly / daily routine.

  42. Wawa would be healthy competition for all others except the bucee’s superstores.

    ReplyDelete
  43. A simple google search about Wawa stores closing down and/or limiting hours in the City of Philly due to the demographics will show to you that they're not coming anywhere close to Atlanta.

    ReplyDelete
  44. We really need one in Gainesville Georgia......They offer the best of everything.Especially the coffee......

  45. I’ve lived without Wawa since I moved here in 2004 and always stopped when back up north. Need to get my meatball fix. Come to Savannah.

  49. Yes!! I’m from N.J .put one by the Atlanta motor speedway!!! Business will POP there!!! Better be quick all the land around it is being sold!!!! It will definitely bring in some profits there!
I always loved wawa . I’m 54 now and lived in Ga. For 20 yrs. When asked if I miss anything in N.J .? It’s always the same answer WaWa and the shore !

  50. Sad to see so many people get so excited over a convenience store/gas station. Your existence must be very bleak.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Happy to see another flavor of convenience store set up shop in the state. Visited Wawa in trips to the NE and found the stores to be clean and I did not consume any of the prepared foods.

In the past QT was my go to store for fuel and drinks. My job involved traveling all over the south and Midwest. This changed when my employer had Costco in one day for a demo and I signed up for a card.
The item that moved me away from QT was being turned down for a gas card. My credit at the time was very good.

I have stopped in QT in the Metro Atlanta area and found the restrooms to be dirty. smelly and the floors are wet. That kills any idea of picking up a snack or a drink at QT.

    .

Costco fuel pumps open up early in the morning and the area around the fuel islands are clean.

  59. Although I live in Henry County and love WaWa as I am originally from Baltimore, we do not need any more gas stations. I travel a lot for work, so I would love to see a couple of WaWas on Interstate 16. One would also be great between Augusta and Covington on Interstate 20 as well.
