[ALERT] Costco is Opening a New Metro Atlanta Store Sooner Than You Think

Costco recently started construction on what will be its eighteenth store in Georgia.  The store, located at 2245 Jodeco Road, helps anchor the new Bridges at Jodeco mixed-use development in Stockbridge.  Overall, the project, located just off I-75, spans 158 acres and will include retail, entertainment, and dining options along with apartments and townhomes, among other features.

The new Costco will include the popular warehouse club's grocery and general merchandise offerings as well as a cafe and fuel center. (About a half mile from the new Costco is a RaceTrac that opened in 2019 - perhaps the only unit in the chain to offer a drive-thru.)  The Stockbridge Costco will be the Issaquah, Washington-based chain's newest in Georgia and first since the 2022 opening of the Costco on Parkway Boulevard in Athens.  The company opened stores in Pooler near Savannah and in Dallas 2021 and also opened a store in Sharpsburg near Peachtree City in 2019.

Depending on memberships for a significant part of their revenue, Costco currently offers three membership types, with many consumers opting either for their "Gold Star" ($60 per year) or "Executive" ($120 per year) options.  The company made headlines in June when reports surfaced that the retailer was cracking down on nonmembers making in store purchases using the club's self checkout lanes.

The club is known to carry higher-end merchandise than rival Sam's Club, and also features their popular "Kirkland Signature" house brand.

Costco currently operates sixteen standard warehouse clubs in Georgia as well as a "Business Center" which caters to small business owners, in Morrow, in a converted former standard Costco.  The Business Center, which opened in 2012, is about ten miles north of the upcoming Stockbridge store.

There has in years past been talk of a Costco at Northside Drive near IKEA, North DeKalb Mall near Decatur, and later, Northlake Mall in Tucker, but none of those would-be stores came to fruition.  Earlier this year, however, it was revealed that Atlanta-based Fuqua Development was looking to redevelop a roughly 30 acre parcel in Stone Mountain into a mixed-use development that could include a new Costco.  The store has not been confirmed by the retailer but is reportedly "progressing" according to sources familiar with the project.

Established in Seattle in 1983, there are today nearly 900 Costco stores worldwide, including about 600 stores in the U.S.

According to the Costco website, the new Stockbridge store is scheduled to open November 16, 2023!

Are you excited for the opening of the new Costco in Stockbridge?  Where else would you like to see Costco open?  Are you currently a Costco, Sam's Club or BJ's member, or more than one?

  1. I've been a Costco member for so many years that I remember the angst when the Morrow Costco became a Business Center leaving us in Clayton and Henry County without a Costco on the southside of Atlanta. I am thrilled for the new Costco opening one exit away from me! I may go back to Executive member with it close by again.

    2. I’ve been disappointed so many times about promises of a Costco opening on my section of town. even so my heart skipped a beat when I read there’s a possible opening in Stone Mountain, less than a mile from me. Please make this a reality! The location is perfect!

  2. They really need to open a location to alleviate the Cumberland Mall one. Forget going on a Saturday, or Sunday after 11am there. Parking lot takes forever, and so does check-out. Maybe Atlantic Station or East Cobb?

  3. They also recently bought land in South Fulton off Roosevelt Highway, according to the Atl Bus Chron. Some people assume this is for a retail store but it is most likely for another Costco DC to support or replace an existing nearby Costco DC that is at capacity. They will need more room to support Jodeco and East Park Place.

  4. I am so excited for this Costco to open! I have been a member for more than 20 years. When I relocated back to Georgia from Virginia, I was disappointed there was not a regular Costco close by. I do use the Business Center to shop. And I have ordered things from Costco. Soon, I will be able to shop the aisles. YAY!

There are a few people planning to commute to the Stockbridge location. Time prohibits me from doing that.

  14. I live in Stone Mtn, I mostly shop at the Dunwoody location because of the Liquor. If I don’t have to buy liquor, I shop the Brookhaven, and Duluth locations. I am looking forward to having a Costco closer to my home in Stone Mountain.
