Two and half years after ToNeTo Atlanta first reported that a local Barnes & Noble was being replaced by a new RaceTrac, things appear to be moving forward. Barnes & Noble informed customers Sunday May 31 that their store at 2952 Cobb Parkway near Smyrna is closing August 19.
Barnes & Noble posted a message to both its Instagram page and front door indicating that they "continue to look for a suitable new location in the neighborhood." A new Barnes & Noble is slated to open July 8 at the Edgewood Retail District in Atlanta, where a larger Barnes & Noble closed in April 2022 and was later replaced by a Marshalls store.
Another new Barnes & Noble is slated to open in September in Toco Hills shopping center, where its arrival was met with a mix of emotions, given the existence of longstanding local bookstore Tall Tales Bookshop in Toco Hills shopping center.
RaceTrac, with headquarters about a half mile from the bookstore at Atlanta Galleria office park, already operates a store a little more than a mile away at 2550 Spring Road, but the density in the area could easily support both locations.
A timeframe for the "flagship" RaceTrac is not yet known, but given the fuel retailer reportedly plans to make use of the existing structure, it seems possible that the company will add a Potbelly to the building, given how much space they will have.
The new RaceTrac, roughly four times the size of the company's typical units, will feature a convenience store, but could also house a sit-down restaurant, offices, retail, training and meeting space, and a chef's kitchen, among other things, according to the 2023 filing. 'This store will provide RaceTrac a location to try out new services, meet with vendors, and have a showcase operation for training purposes," the proposal went on to say. Cobb County property records show that RaceTrac purchased the property for $12.5 million in December 2024.
ToNeTo Atlanta first reported on the 2.4 acre Barnes & Noble property being marketed as a "redevelopment opportunity" in November 2020 after which plans for a new Lazy Dog Restaurant and Raising Cane's surfaced in 2021 but ultimately never materialized.
The Cumberland area, despite having a tremendous amount of vehicular traffic, does not have many fuel providers. The Costco at Cumberland Mall offers fuel but is rarely without a dozen plus vehicles queued up waiting for gas. A Costco executive previously told ToNeTo Atlanta that the Cumberland fuel center is their busiest gas station on the east coast. A few years ago, Costco added a pair of pumps, but the addition of the RaceTrac should take some pressure off of the Costco fuel center.
For its part, Barnes & Noble will continue to operate a dozen stores in metro Atlanta including a smaller format store that opened in October 2023 replacing a former Bed Bath & Beyond at the Avenue East Cobb in East Cobb. In addition to the East Cobb outpost, locations include those on Peachtree Road in Buckhead, North Point Parkway in Alpharetta, Perimeter Center West in Dunwoody, Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree Corners, and Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw, among others.
Family-owned RaceTrac traces its roots to 1934 and now operates more than 800 convenience stores and fuel centers across Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Texas, and Tennessee.
What are your thoughts on this planned development? Are you excited at the prospect of having such a special, large RaceTrac in Atlanta? Do you have a favorite brand of gasoline?

Okay, I feel better that they’re seeking a new home in the neighborhood for B&N. I still miss when Borders was around the corner too.
ReplyDeleteI love Racetrac. Every Sunday morning I go there and get gas (midgrade), two packs of cigarettes (marlboro reds), lotto tickets (powerball) and a cup of coffee (cream with two packets of sweetener). It's always a nice experience and will be a welcome addition to the area.
ReplyDeleteReplacing a Barnes and Nobles with a gas station? The dumbing down of this country continues. I'm sure Trump and Republicans are so happy they can continue brainwashing a dumbed down stupid country with more fake news and lies and racism and conspiracy theories
ReplyDeleteWow, you need to turn off the news and go talk to your neighbors, all of them from all races, creeds, and political ideologies. Everything does not have to be political and it is the government and media that are brainwashing you my friend.
DeleteNot just the Republicans, the Dems have been doing it for decades. Both parties want the general population to be totally dependent on the federal government. Remember the supposed quote by LBJ?
DeleteI think dumb is going to a store to buy a book for $20 when Amazon will deliver the same book to your door for $10. Since gas doesn't follow that same business model, yes, it's an excellent replacement use. I'm not sure Trump had anything to do with this particular transaction, but if so, then nice job, Mr. President.
DeleteI absolutely agree.
DeleteSorry, 12:04, but Amazon's mission is to run every independent business OUT of business and have the world depend on it. They did irreparable damage to the industry I worked in, through illusion alone. I hope the worst for Amazon, Blue Horizon and Jeff Bozos.
DeleteSorry 12:58pm - Amazon, blue hoo astronaut Katie Perry beyond horizon and Jeff Bozo are ALL DEMOCRAT RELATED!! NOTHING to do with our wonderful AND your daddy President Donald J Trump! Enjoy our racetrac coffee and doughnuts!
DeleteGreat news! If we could replace every liberal bookstore with more gas stations, this country would be in way better shape than it is now.
ReplyDeleteReplace conservative store with empty lots and weeds
DeleteThis is sad to see, I started to visit this B&N cafe as I recently moved to Mableton and this is the closest Barnes and Noble. Cafe options are limited. I must say that the store needed an update. There is a need for a third space and B&N helped filled that gap. Retail business appears to be making a comeback. The Kennesaw bookstore doesn't have a Cafe anymore. They should consider expanding in Mableton or the East West Connector.
ReplyDeleteI really miss the Borders Buckhead sort of a two-story set up. Great place to spend rainy winter day.
ReplyDeleteBless their hearts. Mourning Atlanta's real book store, 24hr btw. We can't even ha a grocery 24hr anymore. Any who, B&N never held a candle to Oxford Book Store. Pharrell Rd or P'tree Battle best high-school date night if you liked fellas that were interested in more than the thoughts on their parent's block.
ReplyDeletePharrell Rd? Whether that was intentional or not, it's pretty damn funny.
DeleteI stopped by the Books-a-Million in Canton the other day which was packed and felt like a B&N back in its glory days. Just can't get ITP folks to read anything that's not on their phones. Maybe TikTok and IG can open up some kind of brick-and-mortar store for the ITP folks.
ReplyDeleteLOL! And those new ITP stores better be SNAP card compliant and shouldn't skimp on security guards.
DeleteAnyone else notice that store and restaurant hours never returned to their pre-covid levels? Everything closes so early now.
