Goodwill Getting Crafty on Northside : Opening in Former Sam Flax

Goodwill in former Stein Mart in Buckhead
Goodwill of North Georgia is opening yet another intown location in the coming weeks. Having added locations at Northeast Plaza on Buford Highway and on Roswell Road in a former Stein Mart in Buckhead, Goodwill will now open in the former Sam Flax store on Northside Drive.  The chain has also added location in Johns Creek and Sandy Springs but its intown growth has been the most amazing
considering the locations and neighborhoods in which they are opening.

Sam Flax, an art supply store, was located at 1460 Northside Drive for over 20 years before relocating to the former Kroger in Brookwood Place in south Buckhead this past fall.  Their former store on Northside Drive is about 25,000 square feet and will function as both a donation center and store for Goodwill of North Georgia.

I was a fan of the Value Village on Bolton Road a few miles away and am hopeful for similar trendy threads to end up at this new Goodwill.  As neighbors in the Margaret Mitchell neighborhood will recall, the Value Village was torn down and replaced by a CVS Pharmacy, and the adjacent buildings are said to be coming down soon to make way for a long delayed Publix.

Goodwill has gotten high tech in recent years with out of state operations offering their "high value" and "rare" items on eBay to take advantage of the online marketplace and its worldwide reach.  Luckily for local thrifters like myself, this advancement has not yet made it way to the metro Atlanta market.  My lovely friends Lauren and Catherine of Decatur's AsianCajuns had one of the most epic finds in Goodwill history a few years ago and of course shared it with their readers.  I'm still amazed at what some people will donate but am happy to see Goodwill doing so well and occupying so many large spaces that would most likely otherwise sit empty.

Are you a fan of Goodwill?  Do you prefer Goodwill over other thrift shops like Last Chance and Value Village?  Would you only wear something from Goodwill if it was new with tags and can't fathom wearing used clothing?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Goodwill is my go-to for shopping even before a mall! So, the attention it's been getting is both good and bad, for me. If more people shop there then, the bargains will be harder to find! Shhhhhh!!!!!

The new CVS is very nice, and I appreciate that Racetrac made some slight improvements to the streetscape.

The boarded-up Blimpie is finally gone, but that abandoned strip mall still remains housing a lonely Family Dollar that has almost no customers and gets robbed regularly. That whole shopping complex needed to go 4 years ago. I can't wait until someone actually DOES something and gets rid of all of it for something better.

As much as I would like to see it, I can't see Publix opening a store at this location, seeing as they have one very close by on Collier & Howell Mill. Perhaps they will prove me wrong! And if so, hopefully its a larger store than the previously mentioned one.

The buzz was that Sam Flax loss their lease at Northside Drive because a new competitor came into the market and got the lease from the landlord when Flax's was up for renewal. Can anybody confirm that, and if so, how did the competitors lease fall thru?
