NEWSFLASH! Slack's Hoagie A Bust in Brookhaven

Slack's Hoagie Shack has closed at TOWN Brookhaven.  I included this odd eatery in my DeathWatch almost since opening in the fall of 2010.  The restaurant was the first eatery to open in theproject, and similar to Larry's Giant Subs in The Prado, another Sembler project, it was the first to close.

Slack's was a higher-end version of an existing fast casual concept from Cinnamonson, New Jersey.  Slack's Brookhaven attempted to upgrade the concept, offer a full bar and full service dining, but it honestly did nothing well, just everything ok.  It was a bad idea to try the higher end concept at all, but especially in the location hey chose.  I'm told the restaurant was funded by a millionaire that opened it "for fun,"  and as I said in November, it would close when he either ran out of money or came to his senses.  A bankruptcy filing in November seemed to signal that he had, in fact, run out of money, and put the restaurant up for sale shortly after.

I'm told an unnamed Mexican eatery will open soon in its place.  Interestingly, a few doors away, There bar & eatery, delayed in opening as a result of shenanigans from Slack's, will finally open later this month.

Expect a number of TOWN Brookhaven eateries to close in the next 12 months, as the project is currently full of mediocre concepts, many of which were poorly planned and executed, and were apparently opened under the false hope that either the surrounding apartments or Buckhead workers would frequent them, which apparently hasn't happened.

Did you ever go to Slack's?  Do you think TOWN Brookhave has too many restaurants?  What do think the next to close in the project will be?  Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

While I hate to see any of the restaurants go, Tre'za will be the next to close, followed by Swirll. Please keep us posted on the name of the Mexican eatery that will take the place of Slack's... Possibly La Parilla?

I'm sure the fact that the developer couldn't even take the time to update their website (still says "Opening Spring 2010" and lists "Coming Soon" as their Store Directory) partially helped. I mean it takes 10 minutes to update a website... if the developer couldn't even do that I doubt they could do little else to help support their Merchants and their investments. (insert jab to Atlantic Station here)

I did not realize that the NEWKS restaurant at Town Brookhaven is run by a bunch of the guys that used to own the McAlister's Deli chain. They have basically recreated McAlister's...which is great!

well, I dunno .. but that's the BEST Publix in town. Hands down.

as far as restaurants and bars .. they could use a Taco Mac ... a place to gather for games and some decent grub. Similar to the Lindbergh location.

more needs happen (in general) along the Peachtree corridor for that project to truly take off.

They've been drawing a good crowd but in my opinion the food was mediocre. They charged extra for fries with your burger. Is that the standard these days? To me that seems chintzy when you're buying an $8+ burger.

The "unnamed Mexican eatery" is Nuevo Laredo Cantina, which has a great reputation in Atlanta. Usually rates Best Mexican by various publications.

Nuevo Laredo Cantina translated into English means "two hour waits on Saturday nights".

Better idea, drive the extra 10 minutes to Buford Hwy and get a better meal at half the price.

I know you're excited to congratulate yourself on the demise of Slacks but I really liked that place. It was a cool place to watch a game and grab a Philly style hoagie. The food was decent although a bit overpriced. I enjoy trying different types of food that are unique to Atlanta. With so many Waffle Houses and Chick Fil A's on every corner, it was nice to go to a unique place. Now excuse me while I go mourn Slack's demise. I don't know what's up with Atlanta in this economy, but in the years I've lived here, I've never seen so many place open and close in my life.

I hate to see any place go away, but I could tell they were only going to be around for a little while the second after I signed the check. The decor didn't match to food they sold. The sandwich type food was way overpriced, and not very good. The service was very slow, I think we were there for almost 2 hrs. And we weren't having another round of beers. It was a bad dinner experience.

Why would anyone name a restaurant after "Pants"? Ever since I had a bad philly from them I haven't gone back.

I wish a fast food chain would move in like the Yum brands (Taco bell, KFC, A&W, Long John Silver and Pizza hut) Burger king and Wendy's would be great!

Slack's associated themselves with the successful chain in Philly. It even show this location in ATL on their website as so but they tried to send out the image they were an independent. Nothing was done right in this place, especially, the menu. They claimed they used Amoroso roll but they weren't. One time there and that's all you can take and expect. Only a matter of time they went kaput. Blaming other businesses for taking away your business only goes to show you that you're not doing something right.

This is only the first of many closures in this strip mall. Baci, Tre'za are next.

I actually liked Slacks and am sorry to see it go - their godmother sandwich was fantastic. But the person that said the decor didn't match the food is right on. I think if they had spent less $ on the high-end place settings, bar ware and decor, and lowered the price $2 on everything, they could have made it.

So many things were done wrong, its hard to know where to start the list. But the last poster re: lower the price $2 on everything is right on. If you go to Slacks site in Philly, you will see most items (ones that are exactly the same as in Atlanta)are in fact $2-3lower.
Also, serving chips with sandwiches, then charging $.75 if you want to sub fries.....ARE YOU KIDDING ME????

I hadn't been over that way in some time, and ventured to Slacks last night, only to find it shuttered. We did walk down to There, and found it to be a hip, cool place with the vibe of a New York City gastro pub, way cool! Too bad about Slacks, we heard that the owners gutted the place, taking everything, including the toilets! Anyway, There looks like it's becoming the hot spot Slacks never had the chance to become.
