Fore! Exciting New Restaurants Planned for East Lake

The new Greater Good BBQ may look something like this
Fellini's founders bringing new restaurants to East Lake.

Fellini’s Pizza and La Fonda Latina owners Mike Nelson and Clay Harper and their partners, Jay Martin and Nathan Bolster, are bringing multiple restaurant concepts to the corners of Second Avenue and Hosea Williams Drive in East Lake. The restaurants will be located less than a mile from the prestigious East Lake Golf Club.

The East Lake Foundation and CF Foundation, Inc. partnered to bring the new restaurants to the neighborhood. The properties were purchased by the CF Foundation in 2005, but the originally planned construction was halted due to the recession.  The sale to the Fellini's group is good sign for the strength of the neighborhood and its prospects for the future.  “This investment will provide East Lake residents with a much needed destination for good, affordable, interesting food and drink” said Rick Bent, VP Real Estate and Development, CF Foundation, Inc.

Between them, Nelson and Harper have more than 30 years of  restaurant experience.  Atlanta native Jay Martin is the son of 2008 senate candidate Jim Martin.  According to his LinkedIn profile, Nathan Bolster is the co-owner of ampersand media,  a production company specializing in photo/film production and web content.

Over the next couple of months, construction will begin to convert the former gas station on the northwest corner into The Greater Good BBQ, the group's fast-casual barbecue concept. The owners hope to have The Greater Good opened later this fall.  On the southeast corner, the restaurateurs will modify the existing green building (formerly home to One Stop food market)  for two new restaurant concepts with outdoor seating, and to construct a third, small restaurant.  These additional concepts will follow The Greater Good, likely opening early next year.

A representative of the development indicated that none of the three "new" restaurants will be La Fonda Latina or Fellini's Pizza locations. (There is already a Fellini's Pizza less than three miles away on Commerce Drive in Decatur.)  The same restaurateurs previously operated a craft frozen yogurt shop in north Buckhead called Three on the Tree which later became a hot dog joint called Ringside Franks & Shakes.  The space the frozen yogurt shop and hot dog joint occupied is today home to The Greater Good BBQ.

The first Great Good BBQ opened in Tucker in 2012.

Nelson and Harper opened their first Fellini’s Pizza on Peachtree Road in Buckhead in 1983. In the years since, the group has expanded to include seven Fellini's, five La Fonda Latinas and two Greater Good BBQ locations, all in metro Atlanta.

I'm from this area, so I remember when there was a Church's Chicken and a corner store here. I wondered what would eventually come to this intersection, which is the only underdeveloped intersection on 2nd Avenue. Count me as unimpressed with this choice: we already have too many Fellini's, and there are a ton of pizza joints not far from here. A large neighborhood bar would have been appreciated for the local crowd that's tired of Oakhurst, Kirkwood, and Decatur.
