Bits & Bites

The new Panda Express at Sugarloaf Marketplace
A number of tenants have opened at Fuqua Development's new "SugarloaMarketplacecenter in Duluth.  Anchor store Sprouts Farmers Market has opened along with Zoes Kitchen, Waffle House and Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. Panda ExpressRaceTrac, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Schlotzsky's, Pie Five Pizza Co. and other tenants will open soon.
South City Kitchen Buckhead is slated to open May 24th.  The southern restaurant, the third by the same name from Fifth Group Restaurants, is located in the lobby level of One Capital City Plaza on Peachtree Road by the Buckhead MARTA station.  The office building was formerly home to Star 94(.1) and is now home to the corporate headquarters of home-builder Pulte Group.

Fifth Group's other Buckhead restaurant, Ecco, a Mediterranean concept,  is planned for an outparcel at Phipps Plaza and will probably open in about a year.  The restaurant will be built between Phipps Plaza and the upcoming AC by Marriott hotel, and like South City, will have a patio overlooking Peachtree Road.

The SunTrust bank branch at Powers Ferry Square is currently closed as it undergoes extensive renovations.  Representatives at other Buckhead area branches were rather clueless as to when it will reopen.

The "Murder" Kroger on Ponce de Leon Avenue is expected to close June 24th in advance of the planned redevelopment of its property.  The new 60,000 square foot "prototype" Kroger will be located on the ground level of the planned mixed-use development, known as 725 Ponce, and should open in 2018.  Liquidation sales at the current store are expected to begin in about two weeks.

The former Beer Growler Nation on LaVista Road in Oak Grove has been leased to REMAX Metro atlanta | cityside. (Sherlock's Wine Merchant had previously considered opening here) If memory serves, Holley Realty, another local real estate firm, occupied the space prior to the growler shop.

My friends at The Newnan Menu report that Buffalo Wild Wings will soon open in Newnan in place of a shuttered Shoney's.   The restaurant, located at 355 Bullsboro Drive, was first Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse, and reopened as Shoney's in 2011.  Shoney's closed this past summer.  The restaurant is located near the popular Belk-anchored Ashley Park lifestyle center.

Paris Baguette, a international bakery franchise, will soon open its second Atlanta location.   The cafe and coffee shop will occupy about 7,900 square feet in in Merchants Exchange shopping center on Satellite Boulevard near Gwinnett Place Mall.  The cafe took about half of the former Talbot's Outlet store which occupied the larger space until it closed around 2013.  I visited the site this week and was told they are on track to open by the end of next month.  Atlanta's first Paris Baguette opened on Buford Highway in Doraville (inside the perimeter) in late 2013.

Pub71, a Brookhaven mainstay for the past ten years, will close later this month.  The Irish pub and restaurant, located in Brookhaven Station near the Brookhaven MARTA station will close after dinner service (and send off drinks) on Sunday May 22ndThe restaurant was first Mangia 101, an Italian eatery from 101 Concepts, and later Meehan's, their Irish pub, eventually being sold to Robert Adamo who opened Pub71 in September 2006

Chick-fil-A plans to reopen its rebuilt restaurant on Windy Hill Road on Thursday May 26th.  The restaurant, which sported the chain's dated exterior, closed at the end of last year and was completely rebuilt.  As with all new openings, the restaurant will celebrate the opening by awarding the first 100 patrons in line a card good for 52 free #1 combo meals.  Patrons looking to participate must live within a set radius of the restaurant and be prepared to stay at the restaurant (outside) for up to 24 hours in advance of the opening.

Another Chick-fil-A coming to Fuqua Development's Glenwood Place project just of I-20 was previously on track to open in May but has been pushed to June.  The restaurant will also celebrate with a First 100 giveaway ahead of its planned June 9th grand opening.

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill is officially open at The Atwater on Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta.

RE: Pub71,

From their facebook page:

"After some serious consideration I have chosen to not renew my lease option and we will be wrapping things up at our current location. There are many factors that play into this decision and please feel free to ask ME about them but the most important one is my desire to be not just a good Dad to my little girl Sofia but to be a great Father."

Thanks for your comments and readership!

Your memory is correct--Holley Realty was what was in that space before the growler place.

Speaking of Duluth I saw that the Old JC Penny has a new tenant at Gwinnett Place. It appears both floors are being occupied by Beauty Master. This has to be one of the countries largest weave stores. I would have never guessed in a million years that building would ever see another tenant especially it was being marketed for sale not lease.

I'm just not getting the Sprouts thing. Seems to be part Trader Joe's and part Whole Foods and, in my opinion, isn't doing either one of them very well.
