[SCOOP] Jeni's Spendid Ice Creams Joining Coda in Midtown

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams will later this fall open its sixth metro Atlanta location in Midtown.  The new "scoop shop" is slated to open within the food hall at the new coda project at 756 West Peachtree Street, not far from the campus of Georgia Tech.  A permit filed Thursday with the City of Atlanta indicates that the company will spend $130,000 to build out what sources indicate is a nearly 700 square foot stall within the hall. Jeni's is believed to be the "ice cream shop" that we previously reported was "close to signing" at the new development.

At coda, a uniquely designed John Portman project, Jeni's joins previously announced tenants Aviva by Kameel, El Burro Pollo Burrito Kitchen, Poke Burri, Wildleaf and a new coffee shop from Thrive Farmers.

ToNeTo Atlanta first reported this past October that Jeni's was planning its fifth Atlanta area location for Buckhead at Buckhead Market Place on West Paces Ferry Road.  Jeni's Buckhead will occupy a portion of the former The North Face store (The North Face consolidated their Atlanta operations into a single store at Lenox Square.)  Permits indicate the shop will be about 1,400 square feet and will open alongside Velvet Taco, a Dallas, Texas-based quick-serve taco joint that ToNeTo Atlanta was first to announce was opening this past July.  More recently, we shared news that The Merchant, a local retail store, closed at Lenox Square and will reopen later this fall alongside Velvet Taco and Jeni's.

At nearly 1,400 square feet, the Buckhead Jeni's will be nearly double the size of the Midtown location and will cost more than twice as much to build out - some $320,000 - according to a permit filed with the City of Atlanta.

Jeni's, like Atlanta-based High Road Craft Ice Cream, produces a wide assortment of year-round and seasonal flavors, many of which are rather unique.  Flavors offered by Jeni's include churro, sweet potato with torched marshmallow, goat cheese with red cherries, Riesling poached pear sorbet and frosé sorbet, among others.

Based in Columbus, Ohio, Jeni's sells ice cream and sorbet in grocery stores like The Fresh Market and Publix as well as in their "Scoop Shops," of which they currently have four in metro Atlanta.  The first shop in Atlanta opened at Westside Provisions in October 2013 and has been joined by subsequent locations on the Decatur Square and in Krog Street Market (November 2014) and most recently, at Avalon in Alpharetta in June 2017.

Jeni Britton Bauer founded Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in 2002.  Today, the company operates thirty-six Scoop Shops in ten states, including one in Washington D.C.  The company already has one shop in Charlotte and according to its website has two more coming soon.

In 2015, the company was sidelined by two instances of listeria detected in its ice cream.  In both cases, the company halted operations, pulled all products and reviewed everything about their production.  They began to test every single batch of ice cream before it went out to be certain a listeria outbreak could never happen again.

The company has been listeria-free since the second listeria case of 2015, and is seemingly poised for continued expansion of its its retail footprint as it quickly approaches 50 shops.

Are you excited for the addition of Jeni's in Midtown?  What is your favorite ice cream shop?  Where would you like to see Jeni's open next?
