A pair of Athens businessmen are nearing completion of their new Atlanta eatery. "The IVY" will soon open at 3717 Roswell Road in the old Carbo's Cafe and Piano Bar space. Carbo's was open for over 25 years before closing and becoming Chastain's Neighborhood Sushi Bar & Tavern in 2008. Just a few months later, the structure was damaged in a November 2008 fire, and never reopened. Gardner Dominick, owner of General Beauregard's and City Bar in Athens, has partnered with Daniel Simmons to open the IVY. The concept is said to be "a classic restaurant and bar" with Dominick enlisting the services of Terry Barbu, of Barbu Concept & Design, to redesign the space. Barbu previously worked on the changeover from 1150 to Opera Nightclub and of the Top Flr, both in Midtown.
According to records, there is about 6,500 square feet of restaurant space and about the same outdoor space with which he will work to create an "upscale, local gastro-pub." I worry about the word "upscale" being thrown into the mix, as you have Tin Lizzy's around the corner doing huge business but all about low-key atmosphere, which I believe adds mightily to its appeal. Consumers today want bang for their buck, and are less about what the look and feel of the place but more so about value. With the redevelopment of Tuxedo Festival festival currently underway, adding FLIP Burger Boutique, Menchie's Frozen Yogurt , Zoe's Kitchen and a host of other eateries to the neighborhood, The Ivy may be approaching its opening at a perfect time. Bring it on. The Ivy sounds awesome particularly with all of the outdoor space.
I have been to both of Dominick's Athens' clubs and they are the place to be. For all of the UGA crowd in ATL we will have a home-bigger and better! Go Gardner!
