Johnny Was Opening at Phipps Plaza

Clothing from a recent Johnny Was collection
Johnny Was opening at Phipps Plaza.

LA-based Johnny Was is bringing its Bohemian lifestyle to Buckhead.  The small retailer will open only its ninth store when it opens in Phipps Plaza later this spring.  Six of the eight current shops are in California including locations in both Santa Monica Place and The Grove.

The Johnny Was Collection was founded in 1987 by the Levite family and is today run by Eli Levite.

At Phipps Plaza, Johnny Was will occupy space 1020 (Suite A10), currently Bebe.  Bebe, like neighboring Coach, is consolidating operations as each chain has a store in Lenox Square as well.  (The Coach space is being taken over by Kate Spade.)

Johnny Was features a distinctively bohemian look and should do well with such complementary neighbors as Rebecca Taylor, Tory Burch, Jack Rogers and Trina Turk.

Johnny Was does not list its wholesale accounts, but select Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus stores carry the line.

Based on their Santa Monica locations it seems like it would be better suited for Buckhead Atlanta but rents might be too cost prohibitive there.

@Anon,

I agree with you on the locations and was going to mention that in the post. With so few locations open, it's hard to say what they want to do long term. They currently have both lifestyle center locations as well as at least a couple within malls. I think the presumed synergy that will be realized in Phipps is what attracted them.

Thanks for your comments and readership.

If they have locations at Santa Monica Place and The Grove, Buckhead rents would not be what would keep them from opening there . . .
