Houlihan's Closes East Cobb Location, Remains Open on Mars

A chain switcheroo in East Cobb.

Leawood, Kansas-based Houlihan's has closed its East Cobb location and will open sister-concept, Chequer's Seafood + Steak in its place.

Chequer's is currently located at 236 Perimeter Center Parkway but is being displaced at part of the massive new, 17 acre development that will include a significant presence from insurer State Farm.

The Dunwoody Chequer's is the only unit left branded under the Chequer's moniker in the chain.  In other markets, Houlihan's operates Chequer's-like concepts Bristol Seafood Grill and Devon Seafood Grill.

The 6,900 square foot Houlihan's in East Cobb at Merchants Festival closed this past Monday and a Chequer's representative tells me they will open "by Easter."

Houlihan's once had many high profile locations in metro Atlanta.  Today its only Georgia locations are in Columbus (2 locations) and Savannah (1 location)

Previous Atlanta-area locations once included Park Place in Dunwoody, Lenox Square in Buckhead, Peachtree Road near Piedmont Road in Buckhead, Colony Square in midtown, and  multiple locations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

According to the Houlihan's website, Houlihan's has about 80 locations in 18 states plus one on Mars.  The chain's largest market is New Jersey with 15 units, while Arkansas, California, Iowa and Mars each have single locations.

Thanks to Billy from RestaurantsATL for this tip.

Do you know if the Mars location offers gluten-free selections? Their website does not specify.

Dunno if the much higher-end Chequer's concept can work there -- the Dunwoody spot is across from a MARTA station with much more retail and office. East Cobb has a failed KMart across the street, a Target next door, and just no where near the density. Plus the space was kinda dated inside and will need a real gutting. Hope to be surprised however, as I could walk there.

Miss Houlihans from back when it was good. Surprised Chequers has lasted so long. Never been impressed with their food. The last time we went there we had the worst server ever. Will be interesting to see how it does in East Cobb.

I don't want to be racist, but that Mars location is totally overrun by those great big green dudes with the red eyes who hiss at everybody. And what's with the sonic cannons mounted in their forearms? Is that some sort of fashion statement, walking around with a big metal tube hanging out over your claw-like hand? Houlihan's should definitely close that location and open up on Jupiter, until such time as those cold Martian dudes shape up and join the Galactic Federation.
