Smoke + Duck Sauce, the Asian fusion BBQ restaurant that restaurateur Gary Lin opened last February in Suburban Plaza, closed last night and will be converted into a sushi restaurant. Although Lin still believes in the BBQ concept, he feels that a sushi restaurant is a better fit for the area.
Tabi Sushi, which will be led by a local Decatur area sushi chef, will offer assorted sushi, as well as poke and ramen. Lin, who will be a partner in the new business, plans to be open in a few weeks after completing some kitchen modifications and light renovations to the 1,900 square foot space.
Lin's original concept, healthy Chinese eatery Chow Bing, previously operated a location on Decatur Street downtown, but it, too, converted to a sushi restaurant, Budi Sushi.
Buckhead's Chow Bing in the Disco Kroger shopping center and Smyrna area Smoke + Duck Sauce on Powers Ferry Road near SunTrust Park remain open. As for the smoker installed at Smoke's Decatur location, Lin hopes to relocate to an as yet undetermined new location in the future.
Are you surprised to see Smoke + Duck Sauce convert to sushi in Decatur? Did you ever eat at Smoke + Duck Sauce, and if so, what were your thoughts? Where would you like to see Smoke + Duck Sauce reopen? Does the idea of a sushi, poke & ramen eatery in the area excite you?

Smoke + Duck Sauce has a special place in my heart because it was the best thing open on Memorial Day the day my daughter was born (and a short walk from Dekalb Medical.) I wish Gary well.
The food was quite good, great sauces and interesting sides. I have some of the worst service I've ever had there when it first opened, but they fixed that. There's just too much nearby barbecue, with Community Q and City Barbecue nearby.
Sad to hear, I really liked the BBQ and the sides. Hope they find a place for the concept.
Sad to hear. Remember treating employees well makes a difference.
LOVED Smoke & Duck! However, nothing will last in the spot because you have to know what's there. There's almost zero visibility from the road. I hope Gary keeps some of his delicious sides. I know the quality will be great with whatever he puts on the menu.
I have t been to smoke duck place but anyone who thinks chow bing is good or special is delusional.
Went once not impressed-managed to get order wrong twice and food was just blah. Sushi & poke sounds good just don't make it overpriced for the amount of food you get.
People can have there own opinions and tastes on food, so they're delusional?
