L'Occitane Returning to Lenox Square

In a move that could be a sign of things to come, French cosmetics and skincare retailer L'Occitane is returning to Lenox Square, leaving the future of its store at The Shops Buckhead Atlanta in question.  L'Occitane closed its store at Lenox Square ahead of its opening at The Shops Buckhead Atlanta during the fall of 2014.  In the years since, the shop, like many in the luxury project, has been largely disappointed by the amount of traffic [sales] that the center has attracted.

The 2,725 square foot L'Occitane store at The Shops Buckhead Atlanta has a number of premium elements including a mini spa, and sources say that the retailer has not been especially pleased with the results of the larger store.

Planning documents for the new Lenox Square store indicate that it will occupy space #3041C, a nearly 900 square foot space on the mall's main level.  The size and location of the space suggest it will occupy a portion of the soon-to-relocate Fendi space, which measures just under 2,100 square feet.

The original L'Occitane space was also on the mall's main level, but was adjacent to Bloomingdale's in an approximately 840 square foot space today home to Sunglass Hut.

The new store is expected to open in time for the holiday shopping season later this fall.

Retail sources indicate that the new L'Occitane store is meant to replace the outpost at Buckhead Atlanta, although the existing store may not close immediately.

Unlike Sephora, which last April opened a second Buckhead outpost in addition to its store in Lenox Square, L'Occitane likely would feel it unnecessary to operate two stores in the area.

L'Occitane also operates Atlanta area locations in Avalon in Alpharetta, Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody, Concourse A of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and on West Broughton Street in Savannah.

Does L'Occitane's return to Lenox Square surprise you?  Why do you think The Shops Buckhead Atlanta has struggled so much?  What retailer would you like to see open (or return) to Lenox Square?

Please share your thoughts below.

I never see anyone shopping in The Shops Buckhead. This entire project has been such a disappointment. Those stores are not for your everyday working middle-class family. Sad L'Occitane will be another one gone from The Shops.
