DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) will be opening a new location at Merchant's Walk in East Cobb county in 2019. The new 14,543 square foot store will occupy a portion of Office Depot which was left vacant following the office supply store's downsizing and re-branding from OfficeMax about two years ago.
The new DSW will be the Columbus, Ohio-based company's third store in Cobb County, joining existing stores in Cumberland Mall in Smyrna and in Cobb Place shopping center on Ernest Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw.
While many have watched with baited breath to see who would acquire or lease the many former Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores around metro Atlanta, OfficeMax/Office Depot "boxes" have proven appealing to many retailers as the office supply store trims the size of its stores.
ToNeTo Atlanta reported in early August that Nordstrom Rack is opening a store in Akers Mill near Cumberland Mall. The new store will open in space currently occupied by OfficeMax with the store planning to downsize and relocate to a vacant space within the center. When it reopens, it too will do so under the Office Depot brand.
DSW, known for off-price footwear and accessories, has added a number of new locations in Georgia in recent years, most of which are of a smaller footprint than the chain has historically operated.
The newly opened DSW at Tucker Meridian near Northlake Mall, for instance, is 16,000 square feet, while the more established store in Buckhead at Buckhead Station is 25,000 square feet.
Merchant's Walk, today anchored by Whole Foods Market, Kohl's, Stein Mart and GTC Merchant's Walk 14 Cinemas, among others, is well occupied with only a handful of vacancies. ToNeTo Atlanta reported early Thursday however that that locally owned The Cook's Warehouse will close their nearly 5,000 square foot store in the center in November after about seven years in business. When asked via Facebook why the store was closing, the company responded saying: "Unfortunately, customer traffic at this shopping center has decreased and the location is no longer sustainable in the long term."
Are you excited for the addition of DSW to Merchant's Walk? What is your favorite off-price retailer? What would you like to see open in place of The Cook's Warehouse?
