Way back on January 25, 2018 we announced that Midtown favorite Woody's CheeseSteaks was planning to open a second location in Buckhead. At that point, sources close to the restaurant indicated it would open in "about six months." Due to a series of unfortunate events and countless delays, that opening was pushed many months. The wait, however, is finally over, and Woody's will open tomorrow, Wednesday October 2. The debut, a soft open, if you will, will take place Wednesday and Thursday and will provide diners with 50% off their meals. A "grand opening" is planned for the weeks to come.
The new eatery, on Irby Avenue near its intersection with Cains Hill Place, replaces the former Sabot women's boutique at 45 Irby Avenue. Sabot, along with neighboring businesses Beth Ann and Razzle Dazzle, closed in 2016. Sabot has since reopened in Powers Ferry Square on Roswell Road near Chastain Park. Razzle Dazzle and Beth Ann have remained closed, although Beth Ann owner Beth Ann Taratoot has done trunk shows at Sabot and has a booth at Antiques & Beyond, next to The Colonnade on Cheshire Bridge Road.
The original Woody's is located in a small freestanding shack at 981 Monroe Drive and has been business since 1975. David Pastoria was the restaurant's original owner, with current owner Steven Renner and operations manger Matthew Porcelli having taken over in mid-2010. The restaurant, located across the street from the Grady High School stadium, is popular for its quality cheesesteaks, and also for their late night hours: until midnight during the week, and until 4AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
ToNeTo Atlanta spoke with Steve Renner Tuesday afternoon who said that the hours in Buckhead will be similar with Thursday also providing dining as late at 4AM.
The original Woody's, which according to Fulton county property records occupies a 572 square foot building originally constructed in 1953, is far smaller than the Buckhead outpost. The Buckhead restaurant, a whopping 1,390 square feet, will provide Woody's a larger kitchen which will in turn allow the eatery to more easily execute its menu and offer delivery and catering. According to Renner, the only menu addition in Buckhead will be potato wedges.
Columbia, South Carolina-based Edens purchased 45 Irby and many other parcels nearby in 2015. Edens also owns nearby Andrews Square and Whole Foods Market-anchored Buckhead Market Place.
Woody's joins a growing list of eateries that have opened or are opening soon in the Buckhead Village, including Silvano Pizza in the old One Star Ranch, as well as Velvet Taco and Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams in Buckhead Market Place. A new restaurant called Fire Hen is expected to open adjacent to Woody's at 49 Irby, with another new eatery, Le Bon Nosh, also slated for a 2020 debut in the new mid-rise apartment tower, The Irby, at 65 Irby on the site of the former Henri's Bakery.
Are you excited about the addition of Woody's to Buckhead? What do you think of all the development in and around the Buckhead West Village? What is your favorite classic Atlanta restaurant?

Are you serious? Cheesesteak connoisseur here. That place is no good, I wouldn’t serve it to my dog.
I think they are famous for being famous. The kardashians of cheesesteak. The best cheesesteak in Atlanta no joke is baldinos on Buford highway.
