[EXCLUSIVE] Chick-fil-A to Replace Piccadilly Cafeteria in Conyers

In a rare move, Chick-fil-A plans to relocate rather than rebuild an existing Atlanta area restaurant.  The Chick-fil-A at 1610 Highway 138 in Conyers is slated to close in 2020 and be replaced with a new restaurant nearby.  The existing restaurant has been in operation since 1990 and sports the same classic Chick-fil-A design which debuted in 1986 at the corner of Briarcliff & North Druid Hills Roads in Atlanta. [The Briarcliff restaurant was demolished in 2017 and reopened in early 2018 with the brand's latest look on the same site.]

The new site that Chick-fil-A will occupy in Conyers is currently home to a Piccadilly Cafeteria.  When reached for comment, neither representatives from Chick-fil-A nor Piccadilly would comment on closure/opening timelines, but planning documents suggest both are likely to occur in 2020.

Plans and property records indicate that the current 4,000 square foot Chick-fil-A sits on a nearly one acre site, while the new Chick-fil-A would be about 700 square feet larger and sit on an over two acre site.

Piccadilly Cafeteria's closure in Conyers would leave the Baton Rouge-based chain with just seven locations in Georgia: Tucker, Stockbridge, Marietta, Decatur, College Park, Fayetteville and Atlanta at Greenbriar Mall.

Metro Atlanta is littered with former locations of Taco Bell, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Arby's and other quick-serve restaurant chains, but not Chick-fil-A.  While former Chick-fil-A restaurants are fairly common in so-called "dead malls" - Gwinnett Place, North DeKalb, Northlake - abandoned freestanding Chick-fil-A restaurants are rare.

ToNeTo Atlanta is aware of just one former Chick-fil-A in the greater metro Atlanta area.

Chick-fil-A in 2015 relocated a restaurant from 400 Pearl Nix Parkway to 805 Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville.  The former Chick-fil-A today operates as a Sonic restaurant.

In Canton, work began in October to clear land of a former convenience store and Subway to make way for a new Chick-fil-A.  The existing nearby Chick-fil-A, originally opened in 1996 on Keith Drive, will be moving next year to the intersection of Riverstone Parkway and Riverstone Boulevard.  The new restaurant is slated to debut in March with plans for the current location not yet public.

Chick-fil-A has completed more than a dozen "scrape & rebuild" projects in the greater metro Atlanta area over the past several years.  ToNeTo Atlanta reported November 27 that the company has submitted plans to the City of Alpharetta to complete a project along North Point Parkway that will see it replace its existing restaurant with one that is more than 75 percent bigger: nearly 8,000 square feet.  There are also upcoming "scrape & rebuild" projects planned in Roswell and Chamblee, among others.

Are you excited for the planned relocation and expansion of the Chick-fil-A in Conyers?  Do you think the newer Chick-fil-A restaurants are boring?  What is your favorite Chick-fil-A menu item?
