[UPDATE] Lidl Looks to Open Several Stores Soon Including Quiet Celebration of 100th in the U.S.

With grocery stores experiencing record sales, one grocer is gearing up to open the first of several stores it has planned for metro Atlanta in the coming months.  Lidl plans to open its new Peachtree Corners store Wednesday, May 13 at 5270 Peachtree Parkway, just south of the new Peachtree Corners Town Center and The Forum.  The store, which ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively reported was coming last year, opens in place of Earth Fare, which exited the market and later closed all of its stores.  The 23,500 square foot store was completely renovated to accommodate the new grocer and while smaller than its other Atlanta area stores which all measure 36,000 square feet, sources close to the company tell ToNeTo Atlanta that it will still offer all the amenities of the larger stores including fresh bakery and self check-out.

Unlike previous store openings, there will be no ribbon cutting or other "grand opening celebration" in order to avoid unnecessary crowds, according to a company release.   The store will open much like its other stores and other grocers have already with practices in place to try and protect customers and workers from exposure to the COVID-19 virus. The store will limit the number of shoppers to five per 1,000 square feet.  An employee will manage the number of people inside and direct people to safely form a socially distanced line outside when the limit is reached.  Protective barriers will be in place at checkout counters to protect cashiers and customers. The store also encourages contactless payment, which discourages the use of cash.

In addition to the opening in Peachtree Corners, Lidl plans to open new stores in Suwanee, Lawrenceville, Brookhaven (Briarcliff & North Druid Hills), Jonesboro and Dunwoody later this summer.

The upcoming store in Suwanee, currently on target to open Wednesday, May 20 27, will be the Germany-based chain's 100th store in the U.S.  (The grocer opened its first U.S. stores in 2017, and while well behind their original growth projections, has in recent months accelerated its growth efforts.)  The 29,000 square foot store is located at 2985 Peachtree Parkway and was built from scratch for the grocer.  The Lawrenceville store, at 3530 Sugarloaf Parkway, was also built from scratch and is currently projected to open in June.

The Brookhaven store, opening in place of The Fresh Market in Brighten Park, is slated to open in July, followed by new stores in Jonesboro and Dunwoody in August.

Several other stores, including those planned for Sandy Springs, East Cobb, Marietta and Woodstock, among others, are slated to open in late 2020 and into 2021.

Have you visited one of the existing Atlanta area Lidl stores?  Do you prefer Lidl or Aldi?  Have you adjusted your primary grocer or frequency in light of the COVID-19 pandemic?

I LOVE Lidl and know many have made it a weekly celebration to see what's new on Wednesdays. The secret is out!

I prefer Aldi because it’s so much closer, but the chocolate chip cookies at Lidl are addictive!!!

We like Lidl but we were at Lidl Stone Mountain on Friday and they were NOT wiping down shopping cart handles. If you go - bring your gloves.

I had never heard of Lidl and didn't even know what type of store it was until someone posted a link to this article on NextDoor.com. Are they in competition with Aldi? And they copied their name by changing one letter and re-arranging the letters?! I'd better not go there because I am already addicted to all chocolate chip cookies!

We need sprouts to come to the Kroger space that is closing at Cambridge square. We need Trader Joe’s to come to the undeveloped wing of Chamblee plaza. Also flower child would be perfect in the Chamblee plaza center.

Yep, Stone Mountain was not wiping carts. Had some wipes out. Didn’t see anyone counting people coming or going in store either and lots of people with no masks.
Hey Unknown - this site is for Atlanta, not NJ.

people need to read the myriad of studies on covid19 instead of just watching msm fear propaganda. Almost half the deaths in GA are from nursing homes. Most of the rest similarly had multiple co-morbidities (obesity, high blood pressure, bad asthma, hypertension). For everyone else, if they get it at all they'll be asymptomatic to mild symptoms. For a healthy person, it's just not worth it to be worried about touching shopping cart handles. The stats are freely available to download from the cdc's website.

Vespajet said on May 10, 2020 at 3:26 PM Wtf does it matter if the person was from New Jersey does everything always got to be about Metro Atlanta let’s give people hell and rant about how this person god forbid commented on this site not relating to the state, but this post is about Lidl, never been there but heard of it, I have been to Aldi, and soon Lynn Haven, Florida is finally getting one not overly far away from Panama City Beach Florida, and hopefully Covid 19 won’t interfere with that grand opening like it is for its groundbreaking unfortunately. 🤔

They are making quite a bit of progress on East Cobb location. Any updates on the opening month for this location? It seems earlier than late 2020.

This is a blog ABOUT Metro Atlanta. Why are you always commenting about Panama City? Go find a blog about that.

Anonymous said on May 12, 2020 at 11:46 and 11:47 PM So what if this blog is about Metro Atlanta and because I was explaining where I was from and secondly there is no blog about Panama City Beach other than a Facebook page I’ve already joined and there is no website unless you count a newspaper and I will not leave this blog because I used to live in Paulding County Georgia, so therefore why don’t you just stop commenting back to me already. 😂
