[EXCLUSIVE] Planet Fitness Stretches to Cumberland Mall

Fitness franchise Planet Fitness has signed on to open at Cumberland Mall.  The new Planet Fitness, which Cobb County records indicate will be just under 16,000 square feet, will open in a portion of the former Sears store at the Brookfield Properties-owned mall.  The Sears at Cumberland Mall was one of 46 "underperforming" stores that Sears owner Sears Holdings (now Transformco) closed in 2018.   Planet Fitness will be located on the back side of the mall (upper level of the Sears box) along Cumberland Boulevard.  The fitness facility joins Round1, an entertainment venue, as well as sporting goods retailers Dick's Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy, in occupying portions of the former Sears
Grocer Kroger was in 2015 in talks to open in a roughly 88,000 square foot portion of the then-operating Sears store but after the store was approved by the Cobb Planning Commission, it was subsequently called off.

A permit filed with Cobb County indicates that Planet Fitness will spend just north of $1 million to convert the former retail space.

Based in Hampton, New Hampshire, Planet Fitness (NYSE:PLNT) celebrated the opening of its 2,000th franchise earlier this year in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  In Georgia, the company has 70 units including existing locations in Atlanta, Decatur, Buford, Kennesaw, Duluth and Lawrenceville, among others.  In early 2019, Planet Fitness opened a new location in Marietta at East Cobb Station (Town & Country shopping center), not far from The Big Chicken.

Most Planet Fitness locations in Georgia are still closed to due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but according to the Planet Fitness website, some have already reopened with several others planning to do so on Friday May 15.

Fitness facilities are becoming popular replacements for mall owners looking to fill anchor and junior vacancies.  In Atlanta, for instance, Planet Fitness already has a location at The Mall West End.

Fellow fitness facility, the upscale Life Time Fitness, plans to open one of its premium "Diamond Clubs" at Phipps Plaza in Buckhead.  The club, planned for the new One Phipps Plaza project, was to be 90,000 square feet over three levels, but construction on the entire project was halted weeks ago as mall owner Simon Property Group assessed its position amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sources close to Cumberland Mall tell ToNeTo Atlanta that Dick's and Golf Galaxy are currently planning to open in August, followed by Round1 and Planet Fitness late this year.

Aren't they going bankrupt?

Honestly I am not a huge fan of Dicks Sporting Goods, but the around 1 and Planet Fitness sounds like a good idea honestly, because this mall needs more choices besides Macy’s since sadly Dillard’s, Nordstrom’s, Belk, or Von Maur didn’t choose this mall, I just wonder what will happen to the Arbor Place Sears since I used to live in Paulding County Georgia, and sadly nothing is being done to the Sears at the former PC Mall in Panama City Florida thanks to Hurricane Michael and Covid 19 Pandemic sadly, but either way JCPenney’s in general better hurry up and reopen all there stores because they will end up like Sears all belly up, same with Sephora, because Academy Sports atleast stayed open during this whole time and I miss them, and Ulta in comparison to Sephora will eventually be responsible for the death of Sephora inside JCP if things don’t change soon. 🤔

Ham said on May 15, 2020 at 1:11 PM It is not set in stone for Jcpenney’s to file for bankruptcy but they brought on themselves I have a female friend who works at Sephora at Pier Park which happens to be inside JCPenney’s so that’s bad news in general if they do close some stores. 🤔
