[EXCLUSIVE] Mutation Brewing to Transform Former Taqueria in Sandy Springs

Two budding entrepreneurs are looking to turn a failed restaurant space into a brewery and taproom.  Mutation Brewing Company is slated to open later this fall at 5825 Roswell Road, just outside the perimeter, in Sandy Springs.  The new brewery will replace Taqueria Tsunami, which closed in the two level 9,137 square foot space in 2020.  Prior to Taqueria Tsunami, the space, two blocks north of I-285, was occupied by Double Zero Napoletana before its "move" to Emory Village.

Planning documents indicate that friends and business partners Chris Shapiro and Jack Poole are opening Mutation with the intention of opening "in a few months."  ToNeTo Atlanta first became aware of Mutation early this year, but there was little known then about the would-be brewery other than that they hoped to open this fall and planned to open in the former Taqueria Tsunami space.  A post to the brewery's official Facebook page September 1 proclaimed: "Funding & permitting is officially completed! Construction for the brewery has begun!"  With visible construction/renovations having only recently started in earnest, and with COVID-19 still wreaking havoc on supply chains, a fall opening may be incredibly optimistic, but who knows?

"Here at Mutation Brewing Company we focus on quality and style above all else for our craft beers. We want our customers to enjoy our craft beer the way we get to, the way it should be, fresh and properly handled. Our objective is to supply the customer with an extraordinarily high-quality crafted beer that can be experienced in our modern and vibrant themed taproom brewery. Our lively entertainment and sociable environment will give the customer an additional comfort and amusement to enjoy.  All types of beer consumers are welcomed through our doors!"

Mutation will open less than a mile from where longtime Sandy Springs watering hole 5 Seasons Brewing closed in late 2018 after nineteen years in business.  About seven miles north, Pontoon Brewing set up shop on Dunwoody Place in late 2017, and earlier this year announced plans for a new facility in Tucker.

With a second floor patio overlooking Roswell Road, Mutation definitely has greater visibility than either 5 Seasons or Pontoon, and with any luck will be able to find a following like former neighbor American Pie did, enjoying a more than two decade run across the street before closing in 2007
