This past August, ToNeTo Atlanta was first to reveal that beloved Texas burger joint Whataburger would be making its metro Atlanta debut with a restaurant in Kennesaw. In the months that followed, we reported on several other Atlanta area Whataburgers including those planned for Cumming, Woodstock, Buford and Dawsonville. Today, Whataburger officially confirmed a total of eight locations planned for the greater metro Atlanta area.
The previously reported locations in Kennesaw and Woodstock are slated to open later this fall, while six other locations are planned to open next year.
The 2023 openings include:
503 Lakeland Plaza in Cumming
SEQ Buford Drive and Exchange Drive (at The Exchange at Gwinnett) in Buford
3321 Lexington Road in Athens
3201 Atlanta Hwy in Athens
100 Pottery Road in Commerce
15 Wallace Boulevard in Dawsonville
Whataburger's one current Georgia restaurant is in Thomasville, near the Florida state line.
“The Atlanta area is a great location for Whataburger, and we couldn’t be more pleased to make our entry into the community with our Kennesaw restaurant expected to open this fall,” said Market Leader Jon Barideaux, a 17 year veteran of the brand.
A series of Atlanta area events will be held to celebrate the new restaurants, beginning with the Kennesaw groundbreaking on Wednesday, April 6.
Whataburger plans to hire 180 employees at its first restaurant in Kennesaw. Hiring for an Operating Partner and Managers is ongoing. Team Leader and Team Member hiring is set to begin this summer. Whataburger plans to employ more than 1,400 at area restaurants by year end 2023.

Nothing even close to the city. Are people really going to drive 30 miles outside of Atlanta to get a burger when great burger joints abound intown?

ReplyDeleteDid I misunderstand re: 180 employees for 1 fast food restaurant? No way. Thats enough for 3-4 restaurants depending on volume, etc.
ReplyDeleteMuch of those employees will train at the first location, then be used as Cadre to staff up the other ones..
DeleteI'd be very surprised if the Woodstock location is open by the end of the year. I drove past it this morning on my way to work. The medical building is still standing, and it appeared to have patients entering and leaving. Closing those medical practices, demolishing the structure, clearing the site, building the Whataburger, staffing it, and opening? Seems like it might take a bit longer than 9 months. But who knows?
ReplyDelete(As a 4th-generation Texan who moved to Atlanta in '99 but visits family in Fort Worth several times a year, AND who works ten minutes from both the Kennesaw and Woodstock locations? I really hope I'm wrong! I want a breakfast taquito NOW.)
These are all growing communities with many school aged kids that will love those jobs. I also suspect the competition from other restaurants will be less, residents will love another "dining" option and operating cost will surely be less. So, this is probably a good strategy it will be interesting to see when or even if they move closer in to Atlanta.

ReplyDeleteI don't think Whataburger is hoping that people from the City of Atlanta are going to drive to these places. They feel the surrounding areas can support them and they don't have to pay the ridiculously high rents charged in the urban areas.
Are they planning to open any restaurants actually in Atlanta?

ReplyDeleteNone in South GA. Why? Plenty of folks live in Henry county and we would love a Whataburger. As if South GA is dead or something.
