The final FLIP Burger Boutique has been sold and will reportedly soon be converted to an "upscale restaurant bar & lounge." Brothers Joseph and Matthew Hsiao, who had in 2018 purchased the business, sold the restaurant to Kechia Matadin, according to Steve Josovitz of The Shumacher Group who brokered the transaction.
Joseph tells ToNeTo Atlanta that he and his brother in 2021 purchased the building from then owner Cartel Properties and that they will now be Matadin's landlord. According to Hsiao, the brothers plan to reopen FLIP closer to Flying Biscuit Cafe in Midtown (1001 Piedmont Avenue) in early 2023.
For her part, Matadin, who currently operates Daquiri Factory on West Peachtree Street and Cirque Daquiri Bar & Grill on Monroe Drive, will likely open another daquiri-centric business in place of FLIP but she was not immediately available to comment on her precise plans.
FLIP, created by Top Chef Richard Blais with partners Barry Mills and Ron Stewart, started in late 2008 on Atlanta's Westside. The concept was eventually expanded with satellite outposts in Poncey-Highland, Buckhead, Birmingham and Nashville. Others were planned for Charlotte and Washington D.C. The Howell Mill outpost was the last remaining in operation following the closure of the Birmingham location at The Summit in late 2018.
The now former FLIP Burger Boutique at 1587 Howell Mill Road is a roughly 3,000 square foot freestanding building with seating for about 100, bar seating for 16 and a patio that seats another 45 patrons.
Are you pleased to hear the owners of FLIP are bringing the concept to Midtown? Where would you like to see FLIP open? Are you excited to hear of the planned new "upscale restaurant bar & lounge" planned for the former FLIP space?
