[EXCLUSIVE] Another Atlanta Area Suburb to Welcome Whataburger

While many within the city limits of Atlanta will bemoan this opening as "not Atlanta," residents of Roswell will no doubt be pleased to hear that a Whataburger to coming to their community.  Several real estate sources with knowledge of the transaction tell ToNeTo Atlanta that Whataburger has secured the former Steak 'n Shake at 895 Woodstock Road for a new restaurant!

Steak 'n Shake opened on the 1.7 acre property in 2008 and after a management change in recent years, had a string of ten straight one star reviews on Yelp.com in 2022 before closing permanently this past fall.

Given the relative newness of the building and likely challenges that Whataburger would face in getting a new drive-thru approved, it's likely the company will make use of the existing roughly 4,300 square foot structure.

Whataburger opened their first Atlanta area location in Kennesaw this past November. The company has said it plans to add ten more locations to Georgia in 2023, including those planned for Woodstock, Cumming, Buford, Monroe, Covington, Athens, Snellville and Dawsonville.  The Texas-based chain has Texas-sized aspirations of having 50 new Whataburger restaurants open in Georgia by 2030.

ToNeTo Atlanta is actively tracking at least five additional Whataburger restaurants planned for Georgia, one of which would potentially be its closest to an ITP location yet.

Have you been to the new Kennesaw Whataburger?  Do you think Whataburger is worth the hype?  Who do you think makes the best fast-food burger?

Please share your thoughts below.

    5. Me too I'm from Texas. People complaining because of the area. They probably feel it will bring bad things to the area. Once they put whataburger there they will definitely enjoy the food and less worrying about what's going on.. I went to the one in Kennesaw too and it is a bit far. If they put one in douglasville it will be great..

  15. I've seen the hype here for months with the one that opened in Kennesaw. Thanksgiving I visited some family in Dallas, TX and Whataburger is on nearly every corner. Last month, I finally went to the one on US-231 and I-10 in Florida on the way to Destin. Line of cars in drive-thru. I went inside with no line, ordered right away. Burgers come with no cheese. I ordered a double-meat With cheese and it's 99c per slice - so $2 for 2 slices of American. Burgers also come with no ketchup unless you ask. The way the cashier asked me "do you want ketchup or spicy ketchup?" sounded like another up-charge so I passed. STILL took 20 minutes (timed it) to get my order of 1 burger and 1 fries. Both were mediocre! I also expected them to be piping hot given how long I waited. Nope, just warm-ish. I've eaten a lot of burgers and Whataburger isn't close to being in my top 10.

  21. These places are made or destroyed by certain horrible “workers” Let’s hope they can recruit and retain the type that welcomes and treats customers right! No fights and no messing with the food is also a good thing!…gnowhaimsayin?

  22. I am from Texas. Wasn’t a big fan. Just a burger. Went for a visit last October and went back to What a burger. It took 30 minutes to get our food and again it was just a burger. Nothing special to me.

  23. Absolutely amazed by the "need" people state to have a fast food joint open near them. It's fast food = mediocre garbage. Don't any of you cook? It's not hard to grill a burger and it would be infinitely better than a fast food burger.

    1. For me, going to a burger place is also to satisfy the French-Fry urge, since deep frying at home is never that good.

  24. I came for the comments...Never eaten at a Whataburger but it sure is a polarizing restaurant concept!
I worked with them on the Dawsonville deal. Still have no idea when that thing will open but it appears they may be juggling too many deals at once.

  25. Jay, I'm Absolutely amazed by the people who feel the need to come on here to criticize those who wish to have a variety of restaurant locations near them. Now please show yourself out and continue to eat your plant based food.

Now, please establish a Whataburger in Smyrna.

  26. Had Whataburger in Jacksonville when I was down there for the Gator Bowl last week...and have had it several times in Texas...I have to say, I just don't get the appeal. It's ok, nothing worth going out of my way for. I live near there, but I'll willingly drive a few miles west to Culver's. I'd probably go a few miles east to Krystal, to he honest. Or even Wendy's. Or even keep it local with Rhea's. Flame on. (not a BK reference)
