Metro Atlanta's newest Publix is slated to open June 21! The new store, which anchors the new Summerhill Station development in Summerhill, spans nearly 50,000 square feet and sports a retro-inspired exterior design. The store is located at 572 Hank Aaron Drive SE in a portion of a former Turner Field parking lot. Publix will reportedly hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6:45 AM on the 21st to celebrate the store's opening.
In addition to Publix, Summerhill Station will also welcome other tenants including eateries Cava, Rusty Taco and Tropical Smoothie Cafe as well as Piedmont Urgent Care by WellStreet and AT&T, among others. Overall, the more than four acre property will include nearly 87,000 square feet of retail space.
The area, once home to the Atlanta Braves, is now the home of Georgia State's football team and has with it brought more than 1,000 new apartments. Georgia Avenue, too, has blossomed into a restaurant mecca with lauded eatery Southern National, led by Chef Duane Nutter and restaurateur Reggie Washington expected to open June 29.
Elsewhere in metro Atlanta new Publix stores are planned for Buckhead, on the site of the former "Disco" Kroger, Phase 2 of Interlock on Northside Drive in West Midtown, and in Gainesville at the new Limestone Marketplace project, among others.
In recent years the grocer has added new Atlanta area locations in Avondale, East Cobb, Tucker, Dunwoody and Chamblee, among others.
Lakeland, Florida-based Publix currently operates more than 1,300 stores across seven states including more than 200 in Georgia.
Are you excited about the new Publix opening in Summerhill? Have your grocery habits changed in a post-pandemic world? What other types of shops or restaurants would you like to see open in Summerhill?

Hope they will include extra security for the thievery which will ensue.
Bet there will be more security guards than checkout cashiers at that location.
Very unnecessary comment. Smh!
Sound just like a racist. You’re saying because in a black neighborhood it will happen when every store in atl is prone to it
Yeah those thieving college students! Watch out, eh?
Find something better to do with your time. The world has enough negativity. Keep yours to yourself. This will be a blessing for many.
Do you post this sentiment on every Grand Opening article or did you only feel compelled for this location?
Shut up

I live in the area and I'm excited for the opening. Also I hope they do have extra security and cameras - inside and outside. It's not a race thing because I'm black. I want to FEEL safe when shopping. Walk to my car with my kids instead of walking fast and unloading quickly. So bring on the extra security. If you are doing nothing wrong you have nothing to fear. Hopefully people will respect this Publix and not trash it.
Couldn't the Braves had stayed at Turner Field and had also had this development? Why did it take the Braves leaving to have the area developed? Why not have both? It's a disgrace the Braves left the city for Cobb County and a big middle finger to all the Braves fans in the city, and on the east and south sides of town. No way I'm going to drive 20 miles, pay 20 bucks to park and then walk a 1/2 mile to a Braves game. The Braves turned their back on the city. It won't ever be forgotten. They're dead to me.
They sell out almost every game now. I don’t think they care. The city of Atlanta is the one that didn’t want to give up the parking revenue from turner field. The Braves tried for years to get something developed there. They are a business if they can’t get the approval to expand they have the right to move where they can.
No. Things are better for the Braves and the real fans at the Battery in Cobb. Whether you like it or admit to it or not. They couldn’t care less if you’re dead to them. The Battery and Braves attendance flourish, unlike Turner field.
Can you explain this comment? I didn’t see anything in the article about it being self checkout only so I’m assuming there will be a regular number of cashiers…
The lack of vision from Atlanta Politicians resulted in the Braves leaving. They begged the city for years to develop a mixed-use project, but nothing ever happened. Sounds like there was not enough "kickbacks" to the Mayor and City Council like they get from the Airport. Right Mayor Kasim?
Publix sounds like great option for this community, and I suspect they'll have security like most retailers do.
I hope they put a Starbucks in the future
Atlanta Government under Mayor Reed dropped the ball on the Braves. They were SUPPOSED to develop the area around Turner Field like they're doing now as promised. Never happened.....Reed screwed the pooch on this one.
Given that most Braves fans live north of the Grady curve, it was a smart move for them -- but awful for Cobb taxpayers. Might as well get used to it given that Cobb is blue now. What a PITA it was to drive through ATL to get to a Braves game in that crappy neighborhood around Turner Field.
I hope it works out for Publix. The riff-raff chased Walmart out of Howell Mill - an area that is really improving quickly. Just goes to show that gentrification is a good thing and that we need more of it.
It was the middle finger because us fans got the middle finger put to us for years having to drive down to the slums for baseball. Atlanta had its chance to develop the area and make it a destination worthy of the clientele visiting the venue. They had their chance after 1996 but they squandered it. So now you get a new grocery store that will last for a few years.
I was initially skeptical for the prospects of Summerhill, but I have to admit, so far at least, it's really nice. The bars and restaurants are a bit overpriced, but the area has a nice feel to it - so far. Lets hope it lasts. Too bad it happened long after the Braves left. Gentrification works people, but the grifters and community agitators will block it every chance they get.
I’m so happy to see this happen in the Summerhill community. The recent and new additions, such as the Publix, are enabling a long ignored community to begin anew.
I'm glad that we all are excited, some nervous and really just want to understand the plan but it's got us talking. I see the vision and I hope it leads to better business opportunities to come because we need it in our community. I live close by too and I see the homelessness and heavy drug use and activity it sucks! Security is a must
You will feel safe and welcomed. It's a wonderful place to shop.
Can't wait for this Publix to open. And it really sounds like most of the people in the comments must not have been in this area in a long long time. Sorry but the area is not what you think it is anymore. There are actually black people with money now living in the area. We can afford expensive homes just like everyone else. Check the lastest home prices in the area.
I live in this area and my people need to behave and respect what is in our area. If we don't they will leave and instead of blaming ourselves we blame others. Stop being a victim and take responsibility. If we get out of hand then jail is the answer. We need security and the police. This Publix is a door for other businesses to come and that door can close easily. Behave yourself or be held accountable.
I'm going to laugh when this store closes. It's not a question if people in the area can afford it or not it's a question if people can respect and not misbehave/rob/destroy this store. Security is needed and the courts needs to enforce the law. So I wonder what will open in its place 🤔 ... News at 5
White people steal too.
There are many young whites moving to the inner city that got tired of sitting in traffic so much in mornings and evenings on interstates and major roads
Me too, it's great location for a drive through.
appease add the following, a Starbucks, slutty vegan, chopped, and a First Watch or Snooze
I agree with you 100%.
Please add a Starbucks, First Watch, or Snooze; thanks.
Y'all are so uniformed and confident. The parking lots around Turner were all owned by one rich white man. He didn't want to sell or develop ever. He died in 2013, then finally the land could be developed. Go get a history lesson.
Hey you idiots, Summerhill and South Downtown Atlanta are undergoing a revitalization. Remember when you could buy a house in the Pittsburgh neighborhood in South Atlanta for $10,000 back in 2012? Well, they're going for $400,000 now. Buy property in those areas before gentrification makes prices go much higher!
