[EXCLUSIVE] Popular Buckhead Restaurant to Shutter After More Than A Decade in Business

Del Frisco's Grille, which opened in Buckhead in 2012, is closing this week, according to a source who spoke to ToNeTo Atlanta on condition of anonymity.  The 9,000 square foot two-story restaurant, situated in front of the Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead, is located at 3376 Peachtree Road, not far from Lenox Square.

Del Frisco's Grille replaced the short-lived craft and craftbar restaurants, both concepts from celebrity chef Tom Colicchio.  The pair of restaurants opened at what was then The Mansion on Peachtree, A Rosewood Hotel, in late 2008, but closed in early 2011.  The large space was fully renovated to suit the needs of the more casual Del Frisco's, but the most noticeable change even to those not dining, was the addition to a two level patio to the front of the restaurant along Peachtree Road.

When Del Frisco's Grille opened, it was owned by Del Frisco's Restaurant Group.  Today, following a series of transactions, Del Frisco's Grille (DFG) and Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse are owned by Landry's, a huge hospitality company based in Houston, Texas controlled by billionaire Tilman Fertitta.  In addition to Del Frisco's, Landry's also owns Morton's The Steakhouse, which used to be across the street from DFG in Buckhead, as well as The Palm, which is basically across the street from DFG in the lobby of the Westin Buckhead hotel, among others.

Notably, DFG Atlanta suffered significant damage during the violent looting and fires of May 2020. The restaurant renovated and fully reopened shortly thereafter, with its sudden closure this week coming as a surprise to many.

The company's next closest locations to metro Atlanta are in Tennessee (Brentwood & Nashville) and Florida (Tampa & Fort Lauderdale).

Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse, the more upscale of the two concepts, debuted in Dunwoody in September 2018 in the street level of Phase 1 of Park Center, the new State Farm headquarters development.  Sources indicate that the Dunwoody restaurant will remain open.

The DFG chain has struggled in other markets, too, with locations in Palm Beach and Phoenix both closing in late 2015 and others in Little Rock; Stamford, CT; and Upper Kirby in Houston all closing in 2018.  The outposts in Washington, D.C.; Bethesda, MD; Huntington Station, NY; and Chestnut Hill and Burlington, MA shuttered in 2019 just ahead of the sale to Landry's.  The chain also  closed a restaurant in Uptown Dallas in 2021.

According to the Del Frisco's Grille website, there are currently seventeen locations throughout the country including the one in Atlanta.  Four of the chain's remaining restaurants are in its home state of Texas.

The Buckhead restaurant is expected to close at the completion of dinner service Thursday, August 31.

Are you surprised to see Del Frisco's Grille close in Buckhead?  What would you like to see open in place of Del Frisco's Grille in Buckhead?  What is your favorite Buckhead restaurant?

The days are numbered for these overpriced steakhouse restaurants. Business entertaining, the main source of customers, is on sharp decline as expense accounts are being cut out by businesses trying to stay in business themselves.

And the average person just can't afford the super high prices these places charge other than a splurge for a very special event. I expect to see more of these overpriced premium restaurants close in the future as the economy continues to adjust to high inflation, high prices, and incomes not keeping up.

Lower end restaurants are closing too, sometimes almost disappearing from existence. This location and the restaurant itself aren’t unique or special enough, which is the problem. Mortons was in this area and closed a few years ago. Ruths Chris and New York Prime both do quite well. Just the thinning of the herd.

in 1962 there was a Papa John's there. But it wasn't the pizza place--it was a 24 hour diner type of place.

To justify that price point, service and food have to be better than average. I'm just not seeing it and agree with others. Expense accounts are lower and with the work from home shift, not as many business lunches and dinners.

Sounds like they suffered from an identity crisis as people seem to think this was an expensive restaurant. This was a wings for $12 on a rooftop patio type of place

Anonymous said...

It’s actually not that expensive but there is a decline in chain restaurants that aren’t that special. People are definitely still going out to eat but the competition is stiff and I’m sure the rent there is expensive…..

Probably nothing to do with the crime-infested housing projects (Cyan, Icon/Elora, SkyHouse) surrounding it.

Anonymous said...

Nope, not at all, since there aren’t any housing projects there. Please go to another city if unhappy here.

We stopped going here for business lunches when they started charging $10 to valet park your car. We enjoyed the food, the service and the atmosphere, but felt the $10 (usually 3 cars so $30) was just an attempt to gouge the customer and valet parking was the only choice. Too many other options around to park for free and eat. So they lost out on a $200-$300 lunch tab because they wanted to gouge on the parking. Their loss.

Those apartments are pretty sketchy with a lot of shady people coming and going. All have had shootings and Sky House currently has a severe gnat infestation because of trash overflow. Just read some of the reviews.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Waldorf Astoria moves out too. North Buckhead isn't an upscale area anymore, plus the office buildings can't find tenants and are going into default (see Tower Place).

Huh, I always wondered where Colicchio's restaurant was located. And it looks like it lasted longer than I thought. I visited his restaurant once in Vegas and was disappointed.

That looks like a nice building though.

Anonymous said...

Not surprised. I ate there more regularly when it first opened. Went last year and it had gone down several notches in quality and service.

Anonymous said...

Yeah $3500 a month housing projects

Anonymous said...

Ate there once. Awful was being kind. I thought food quality would equal Double Eagle which in D.C. is great. They should have closed earlier.

Anonymous said...

Surprised they made it this long because of the horrible service. I quit going there 5 years ago.

Anonymous said...

They are horrible company didnt give us staff any warning and dont care how we are affected

Looks like a nice stretch of Peachtree, but has turned into a crime ridden shit hole. I would bet they have a hard time staffing the restaurant w no tip customers.

Unbelievable, all the mangers, G.M. don't treat their staff right, they hire left overs from other restaurants that failed, they only hire hoodie people, who never smile, none of the mangers, food belongs them instead of Delfiscos, the upstairs is open and the downstairs, 🚻 like a ghost town, ,because it's never open , the G.M. is the blame, for the closing .the only great thing was the great lady host at the front desk who treats you like your a diplomat, and family, who is always dressed wonderful, and always have a smile.i believe her name is Ms Laurie..all the other employees act like it hurts them to smile.

This used to be more of an upscale restaurant, where you might see the who's-who of celebrities, and as a result the service and food were excellent. Then, like many restaurants in Atlanta, they slowly became less focused on quality and fell off. I stopped going 5 or 6 years ago. The Double Eagle concept in Dunwoody is very nice, although I feel the quality is not what it used to be a couple years ago. At that price point and with the large number of competing (and more affordable) restaurants in the area, they need to hit it out of the park every time.

Racist

I have been going there for years and agree they should have closed earlier.
horrible food and service. It was decent in the first years but went downhill pretty fast.

Anonymous said...

Do you even know what part of town you are in? Housing projects? Next to $5 million dollar condos on Peachtree across from Lenox? This is just as racist a comment as I have seen lately

Anonymous said...

It's not the prices, it's the people working there or quality of service. These kids nowadays feel entitled and just show up for a check. Just waiting for the next riot to destroy more of the community. Just a matter of time and more businesses will move

Bones and Hal’s are rocking most every night … del friscos grill was not high end. The double eagle is but it’s really not in a good location and didn’t have the service of a high end steak place…

Anonymous said...

Exactly!! Less expensive the Hal’s or Bones.

Anonymous said...

You should be more worried about what the people are rioting for than the riot. A perceived injustice or abuse of power is what typically leads to riots.

Anonymous said...

The person who said that isn’t concerned, they are racist which is why they post these things.

"You should be more worried about what the people are rioting for than the riot. A perceived injustice or abuse of power is what typically leads to riots."

What an idiotic statement.

And when a certain group of people are told over and over again that they are the victims instead of the master of their destiny, unjustified rioting occurs.

I'm sorry to see delfiscos buckhead close its a great location whn she was the best G.M the restaurant was always pack to the btimere many famous actors and music stars come to enjoy themselves, But to tell the truth the G.M. name Will, is the reason for the closing, he fid nothing to improve delfiscos, he just sat in his office and hide, and just wstch the cctv cameras and left early to go home ,Victoria the bar manager, was a leave it to her ,let her do the dirty work. She always never have a smile ,and dressed like she shop at goodwill. I'm a black lady, past customer, but they only had 2 white staff, the rest of the employees were black ,and act like they lived in Bankhead ga. Straight up hood. The girl servers hair and unform look like ,they just got out of bed.and came to work. The downs stairs host Ms Mcghee, would always greet you, with a large smile ,if the guest had children she would talk to the children. And if the customers was elder, she wouldn't make them walk the long flight of stairs Ms Mcghee would take them up on the service elevator. She was so great to the customers , when their was a problem with the food ,which was their. Always was complaints , they would call Ms Mcghee to fix the problem, but she wasn't the manager, most of the staff like Jalown the Bartender was the best server and greatest Bartender in the world. Their were just 2 white men servers were the greatest men waiters in delfiscos. And the had a food runner with dred locks, light light skin black young man was a excellent food runner and worked fast and always had a smile. Another great Bartender was Ryan he was fast and made fantastic ans made great drinks . Blame alllllllll the management at buckhead delfiscos. The only G
M. That ran delfiscos like a 100 star restaurant was name Ravin. The restaurant was always pack to the brim and she made delfiscos the place to be. But some how ,they set her up and made her leave. That's when delfiscos went down , down, down. And it never recovered. Smh.

I opened the Double Eagle in Dunwoody. Once Landrys acquired Del Friscos quality of food and service plummeted. Landrys is a money hungry, cut cornering company who could care less about their employees. Can't say I'm shocked they've closed. I'm sure the Double Eagle is next.

Former employee?

Last time I was there the food was awful and the service was worse than the food. Nobody wants to spend money on bad food/service.

Anon @ 9:54 AM: Maybe you should just extract the meaning of what the lady was conveying instead of trying to harp on her scripted transgressions. I'm sure YOUR subject and verb agreement doesn't always succeed in a spectacular fashion.

Anon-2:40 PM your post, the content, the only thing I could say is: What does that even mean?

Anonymous said...

It was pretty clear. What don’t you understand?

Anonymous said...

Del Frisco's Grille was never a "high end steakhouse." It's basically a sports bar with no TVs.

The parking situation was ridiculous. No self-parking options, valet always short-staffed. I used to go to the bar and restaurant at the Waldorf and the parking validation policy changed every time I went. Too many good places nearby where it's free parking or a tip to the valet.

Anonymous said...

Buckhead sure is going downhill and fast. Best get out while you still can and move to a better more intown location.

Anonymous said...

More intown? Don't think so. Where do you think the criminals and homeless will move when there are no targets/victims left in Buckhead?

Need to get out of the city and APD's jurisdiction.

Anonymous said...

You don’t have to go to Buckhead then, if you’re too scared of the variety of people who live, work and spend their money there. Feel free to move out to the middle of the woods and use an outhouse with a moon on the door.

Anonymous said...

I always heard about poor customer service. While the food was good, it was not outstanding. People may forgive mediocre food, but when combined with poor service, they will never come back.

Anonymous said...

Didn't they set this place on fire during the "mostly peaceful" protests of 2020? That was the effective death of Buckhead and birth of Buckhood. What a dump.

Anonymous said...

NO ONE likes the big ghetto that inside-285 has turned into!!!

Anonymous said...

Then stay home at your cult ranch in the woods. Don’t come into the city if you’re too afraid of anyone who isn’t white.

Anonymous said...

The dude who set Del Frisco's on fire was white. Wonder how that investigation is moving along? LOL

I use to live at the Cyann for many years. I watched the neighborhood go downhill. My car got broken into. I use to eat next door once in a while. Food was great but service was bad. Nobody was never at the front but valvet. You would think such a beautiful place in a prime location would be packed. It was always empty. They never had the bar downstairs open. It always looked like a ghost town after Covid. I also heard that the management was bad. They just closed another popular restaurant down the street at phipps. They closed the local Krogers in the neighborhood. Times have changed. This Lennox area use to have a lot of business customers in the area. Because of Covid business closed started going remote. Business have been struggling for years. Blame the Government. What we’re experiencing is only going to get worse. Buckhead is the worse area nowadays. It is the Ghetto. Blame your government who still refuses to bring this economy back but fund billions in overseas wars. Most of the high rises are now air BNB which means rentals.

@October 8, 2023 at 7:19 PM

The crazy thing is that they want to build even more apartments in Buckhead despite what a shit show the current ones have become.

I think the city has been trying to move all the drugs and gangs out of the Eastside so the white tech workers who grew up in the suburbs can feel safe while they pretend to be urban and progressive.

All of the tax dollars go to Midtown and the Eastside Beltline now. Everything in Buckhead has to be privately funded (including police).

Incorrect

After Covid , place went to sheet. Waiters were working at I hop a few months prior now in fine dining. Good riddance to bad rubbish!
