Captain D's Seafood Kitchen has closed its longstanding restaurant at 2032 Montreal Road in Tucker. The freestanding fast food eatery, located just off LaVista Road, abruptly shut without notice Monday, according to local ToNeTo Atlanta readers. DeKalb County property records indicate that the restaurant was built in 1976.
The seafood chain in 2023 closed a location on Greenbriar Parkway just outside Greenbriar Mall that is becoming a new Popeyes.
It remains to be seen what if anything may become of the Montreal restaurant in the near term, but real estate sources suggest that its location off, rather than on, LaVista Road weakens its redevelopment or backfill potential.
In recent months, the Northlake area has seen several businesses close, including Captain D's neighbor, Kacey's Home Cooking, which is being replaced by a new Fifth Third Bank, and McDonald's, which continues to sit empty.
That said, a locally owned Dunkin' in front of the nearby Kroger has been a neighborhood staple for more than four decades with the Lee family having owned it since 1985.
Nashville-based Captain's D's started in 1969 and has today grown to include 535 restaurants across 23 states. Years ago, the chain closed several intown locations but has more recently opened several new units in the greater metro Atlanta area including those in Marietta (former Dunkin'), Norcross (new build), and Stockbridge (former Hardee's), among others.
Not far from the Montreal location, Captain D's last fall reopened their Hugh Howell restaurant after a fire had severely damaged it. Over in Decatur, a Captain D's on Church Street was also damaged by a fire and remains "temporarily closed."
Despite the chain's intown struggles over the years, Captain D's has more than 100 locations in Georgia, primarily in the suburbs and tertiary markets. The chain's chief rival, Long John Silver's, has just nine locations left open in Georgia.
Are you a fan of Captain D's? What would you like to see open in place of Captain D's on Montreal Road? What type of food or restaurant do you feel is missing from the Northlake/Tucker area?

Do people ever see many customers at any Captain D's? Just wondering, most locations I pass seem dead.
hadn't been there in about 30 years, when I had a hair in my chicken finger and the workers did not care and would not do anything to rectify the situation. Good riddance.
I had a fingernail in my crepe suzettes there once, tragic
LOL, a hair 30 years ago. I saw a hair in my school lunch and I am still waiting for them to shut down. GEEZ
Yes, the one on Hugh Howell stays pretty busy
During the pandemic, I used their drive through ONCE. They served TASTELESS food. That said, I have never been a fan of fast food seafood. Many businesses along Montreal have died lately, I'm sorry about that.
the norm is that if someone points out something disgusting regarding the food, that they should replace it. WWCFAD--what would CFA do? This place had no customer service. It's amazing that it lasted almost 50 years.
a Captain Ds closing is like a tree falling in the woods in the middle of the night.
I’m sure the employees who were there 50 years ago who didn’t do anything are long gone from there and have no impact on why it closed. If you didn’t go back for 30 years they weren’t waiting for your money to keep them open.
That area at Northlake Festival and the Kroger and around it can all use an update. It’s long overdue
Sure there are plenty of other fish and chicken restaurants in that area
Agreed, all it would take is a decent face-lift of the building facade and a complete resurface of the parking lot to begin attracting some new merchants and not just another unknown storefront.
got any names for fish places?
fish places?
Arthur Treachers?
JJ FISH
What happened to McDonalds on LaVista? I've never seen a McDonals close down and they were always busy. What happened?
this closed a few months ago and was covered on this site. That stretch of Lavista from Harobi to 285 has seen a lot of places close and go away. I am fortunate to have experienced the heyday of the McD's and Arby's on that lot, and later the Italian Oven and Fuddrucker's nearby.
I went to the Montreal location a few months ago. They had no drinks and the restaurant was due for a much needed renovation. Now it's no more. I didn't know Kaceys was shuttered. I ate there a couple times a year.
Aurther Treachers has been closed down for decades.
It closed down. Out of business.
But feesh!! Mmmmm
I doubt they going to turn the closed captain D’s into a Popeyes it’s a new Popeyes on lavista around the corner
I went there regularly in the 2000's but moved away from the area in 2013. Building was in really bad shape then and HVAC was always on fritz, FF&E sketchy at best; apparently corporate management would never spend a dime for repairs or rebuild. No wonder staff had high turnover, but long-time manager Janet was friendly and always made sure food was good. Things must have gone into a death spiral since, so what would you expect except closure.
