[EXCLUSIVE] Trader Joe's Opening Two New Atlanta Area Stores By Year's End

ToNeTo Atlanta has been your number one source for commercial real estate news for more than fifteen years!  We have broken countless stories before other media - print or digital - and we are pleased today to do it once again.

Trader Joe's in Chastain Market

After exclusively reporting October 3 (via the ToNeToATL Instagram page) that Atlanta's newest Trader Joe's store is slated to open November 1 in Chastain Park (Sandy Springs), we now also have an opening date for a new store in Halcyon in Alpharetta, too.

The new Halcyon store, 6365 Halcyon Way, is slated to open Friday, December 13, according to a source familiar with the grocer's plans.  The new store joins other recent additions to Phase 2 of the Alpharetta mixed-use development including Chick-fil-A, The Forum Athletic Club, and Dogtopia.

Monrovia, California-based Trader Joe's opened its first stores in metro Atlanta in October 2006.  Today the company operates six stores in metro Atlanta: Midtown, Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Peachtree Corners, and East Cobb, with a seventh Georgia store in Athens which opened in late 2010.

ToNeTo Atlanta first reported this past December that Trader Joe's was looking to add as many as six new stores to the greater metro Atlanta area. In the months since, we have shared that the beloved grocer is opening the aforementioned stores in Chastain Park and Alpharetta, but also stores in Johns Creek, Peachtree City, and Decatur, too.

ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively reported in September that the Johns Creek store is coming to Medley, a new mixed-use project off McGinnis Ferry Road in Johns Creek.  The Decatur store is being planned as part of a larger development by Pope & Land along Commerce Drive where it would replace, among other things, the former "Baby" Kroger.  The development, originally by Atlanta-based Stein Investment Group, is still in the planning stages, and while Trader Joe's wants to be there, a deal is not yet done, and could still fall apart, according to sources familiar with the project.

Trader Joe's nearing completion at Halcyon

We have recently received confirmation of the location and timing of the Peachtree City Trader Joe's store and will be sharing that news via our publishing partner The City Menus in the days to come.

The company is reportedly also scouting "intown" Atlanta for one more store but after at least two failed efforts at would-be sites, there is reportedly nothing confirmed at this point.

Not to say that it definitely won't happen but we have heard zero chatter of a Trader Joe's in Tucker, Dunwoody, Brookhaven, Lawrenceville, Buford, Cartersville, Reynoldstown, Doraville, Chamblee, Stockbridge, Carrollton, Acworth, Stone Mountain, Avondale Estates, Stone Mountain, Clarkston, South Fulton, College Park, Hapeville or Villa Rica.

Are you excited for the openings of the upcoming Trader Joe's in Chastain Park and Alpharetta? What potential upcoming Trader Joe's store are you most excited about?  What is your favorite Trader Joe's item?

Please share your thoughts below.

  1. Looking forward to the Chastain opening although I'm not really a frozen food buyer. I do like their peanut butter and Wisconsin Kringle! Sounds like the closest (to me) proposed location in Decatur is unfortunately years away.

    2. I moved from Roswell to Gainesville. I know many people have commented on the Gainesville community page, that many people would love a Trader Joe’s in Gainesville. The downtown historic part is fast growing, and would be perfect! Especially with the hospital walking distance from there as well.

    3. West end, Adair Park would love a trader Joe's. Shoot we'd take Hapeville. Anything closer to SW atlanta! It's growing like crazy

    5. Gainesville has thus far only rated a couple of Aldi's, but we can't seem to score a TJ's, even with a population here in the city and county of over 200,000!

    11. Peachtree City will be a profitable store for Trader Joe. Considering the amount of shoplifting I saw at Sams on Mt Industrial, I would not consider any business in Dekalb or Decatur.

  3. We have to drive so far from Lawrenceville to go to Trader Joe’s. Looks like some of the newer ones are going close to existing ones. They need to spread them out more.

    1. There are plenty of retired people in the Braselton/Hoschton area with expendable dollars & we love to eat. I will not go into Atlanta area….too much traffic. Please place one up north off/close to I-85 to serve all 40 + miles out of north ATL

  10. @Anon@ 2:27PM - There's one literally down the road on Peachtree. While Publix may locate a couple of miles from another store, TJs does not.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Literally I know that, I shopped there. Eli mentioned this as a possibility before. They could also move there, parking would be much better. I know what TJ does and Publix does. Literally.

  11. The addition of a Trader Joe’s coming to Peachtree City would be a massive WIN for all of PTC, its local golf cart nation and ALL surrounds areas that will welcome you TJ’s with open arms!!!

    1. Great news that one is planned for Peachtree City! Finally! Hard to get things on the south side!

  12. Stop putting everything in Metro Atlanta and North Atlanta. There are plenty of customers south of the city that deserves a TJ as well. Quite frankly since we do commute north to shop we contribute to the annual sales. But the traffic is horrendous now. Not fair to south metro Atlanta. Options.. Peachtree City, Newnan, Sharpsburg, South Fulton..

    1. Warner Robins! Tifton! Those are south of Atlanta.

    2. Stop putting stores where they'll make money. They put stores where the money is. Seems to be working.

  16. South metro Atlanta (Fayette/Coweta Counties) deserves a Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Peachtree City!! Can’t wait for this one to open so we don’t have to drive to ATL to shop at the one closest to us in Fayetteville!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I’m excited for the one yall say is coming to PTC!!!

  26. You've gotta be kidding me. We're out here waiting for one in Smyrna forever (the "Marietta" one is 30 minutes away) and they put a SECOND ONE in both Sandy Springs AND Alpharetta?

    ReplyDelete
  27. TJ the West side of Atlanta needs you. We know you prefer to look at financial markets with income values BUT most drive over 1hr to get products. Let’s turn the page and spread out to other locations. Douglasville, Hiram, Villa Rica, etc are also building mixed use communities so we will welcome you with open arms! We are growing!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I do not understand why you will not come to Smyrna Vinings area. It is highly populated. We have to drive either all the way to Buckhead and never find a parking spot or Sandy Springs, which is very far we have done many petitions in this area to get a Trader Joe’s but instead, you open up on a Chastain Park, which is right near Sandy Springs store. Makes no sense please bring one to us.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Lawrenceville or Buford would be amazing and closer to us. The frozen Indian entrees are the family favorite!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Please we need one in Stockbridge or McDonough GA !! There is a Big Costco just built 3 months ago on Jodeco Rd , and a huge land waiting to be built around it .
There is no Trader Joe’s around us for 30 miles . Thank you

  31. Put one by Cumberland Mall. In Smyrna. We want it! I hope you read this and do what we all are saying. After all this is how companies decide where to put stores! We know it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. We would love to have Trader Joe’s come to Woodstock/Acworth area.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Can’t wait for Alpharetta and John’s creek OR are they one and the same? Sorry I’m confused.

    1. Alpharetta: Halcyon
      Johns Creek: Medley
      Reading is fundamental.

  34. What do we have to do to get one on the Southside of Atlanta! If I want to go to TJ’s I have to drive to Sandy Springs or Johnson Ferry which is a pain with Northside traffic and roadwork!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Alpharetta and Johns Creed…awesome and thank you!

  38. They need one in Lawrenceville/Snellville area. I have to drive so far to go to Trader Joe’s. Sandy Springs and Alpharetta already have Trader Joe’s nearby. Why would they even need new stores built there?

Smyrna Vinings & beyond there is not one & there are 2 sprouts.

We drive 40 mins to go to a Trader Joe’s each way!

  47. Residents in Canton have been begging for a Trader Joe's to open in CANTON. It would be a perfect location to serve Blue Ridge, Elijay, Jasper, Ball Ground, Canton, Holly Springs, Woodstock, Cartersville, Rome and Calhoun.

  48. Have been hoping for a Decatur store for a loooong time! Live in Tucker, but am in Decatur regularly, and a Decatur store would definitely be the only one I could get to very often.

  49. Acworth, Kennesaw, or Dallas!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. We have been driving 40 minutes each way when the traffic isn’t bad! Please come out to Smyrna, Vinings, Cumberland area. We don’t like sprouts & there is 2 of them. If there is enough business for 2 sprouts locations then you should look at the area. I don’t know one person that even goes to sprouts. We all want Trader Joe’s! I’ve been to sprouts 2 times in 30 years! We drive to go to Trader Joe’s every week! I know our fb groups have been petitioning to get a Trader Joe’s in our area for years!

  51. So many of my friends and neighbors are praying for a TJ in Canton. Please consider this location

  52. Tucker please! Or Decatur second choice

  53. what about Newnan we would like to see T j here

    ReplyDelete
  54. Please TJs, come to the Vinings/Symrna/Cumberland area!!! I drive weekly to the Sandy Springs/Buckhead locations, but know that you guys absolutely have the customer base for this area as well!

  55. No, not excited about having to drive through or to Atlanta to go to a Trader Joe’s. We need one on the south side of Atlanta. But they don’t listen to us.

    1. I know when they read this they just laugh and talk about how stupid people are who want them to do things. They read this all the time when they want to know where to put their next stores, and when they want a good laugh at how people think they know everything. Laugh and laugh and they don’t listen.

  56. We need a TJ’s in Cartersville GA.

    ReplyDelete
  57. They really should put a store down south, like Henry County. Sprouts is opening this month in McDonough and Trader Joe's would be a great addition. All of their stores are too far north.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Cochran or Macon will be good. We need in Macon.

  58. Dawsonville, GA needs a Trader Joe’s.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Can't believe none located in Kennesaw-Town Center-Acworth area to date. The parking lot and store at Whole Foods in the area is always bustling with activity since it opened. We need variety - some things I like at WF, and others I prefer from Trader Joe's. I love both stores, however.

    ReplyDelete
  60. We need one in/near Hapeville BADLY!! I beg! The closest one is Midtown and so many people have to go to that one that there is never anything in stock and it's always chaos - makes it such a bad experience. There are zero TJs below I-20 and no plans to have anything nearby. South Atlanta deserves one - it would be flooded every day!
