[ALERT] Trader Joe's Finally Looking to Grow its Georgia Presence

If you had more Trader Joe's stores on your holiday wish list, you're in luck!  We have heard rumblings for more than a year that the popular boutique grocer was looking to add to its metro Atlanta presence and that smoke seems to have some fire now.

At least one store was reportedly confirmed by the company, with another source close to the grocer telling ToNeTo Atlanta that as many as six new Trader Joe's are planned for the greater metro Atlanta area over the next two years.

Forsyth County News (FCN) this week reported it received confirmation from Trader Joe's that they plan to open a new store in Alpharetta.  The grocer reportedly declined to identify the exact location but FCN along with ToNeTo Atlanta both suspect the store is planned for phase 2 of Halcyon off Exit 12 in Forsyth County.

Documents reviewed by ToNeTo Atlanta indicate that Halcyon developer RocaPoint Partners was earlier this year working with Forsyth County on some additional land use entitlements for the development of a "high-end, extremely desirable national retailer."  The developer indicated that there was a Non-Disclosure Agreement  (NDA) in place that precluded them from naming the retailer.

Real estate sources with whom ToNeTo Atlanta spoke both over the summer (when we first heard of the Alpharetta store), and more recently, indicate that the size of the store and the secrecy surrounding it are indications of a Trader Joe's store.

Monrovia, California-based Trader Joe's opened its first stores in metro Atlanta in October 2006.  Today the company operates a total of six stores in metro Atlanta - Midtown, Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Peachtree Corners and East Cobb - with a seventh Georgia store in Athens which opened in late 2010.

By comparison, Aldi, which has owned Trader Joe's since 1979, operates 78 stores across Georgia. [Aldi in the U.S. is operated by "Aldi SΓΌd" while Trader Joe's is owned by "Aldi Nord" with both divisions tracing their roots to brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht.]  That said, the excitement of an Aldi opening in a neighborhood pales in comparison to news that Trader Joe's is coming.

ToNeTo Atlanta has been in existence for more than fifteen years, and in our nearly 4,000 posts, Trader Joe's is the most frequently mentioned name when readers respond to what should replace x, y, or z, even if x, y, or z are a former Mattress Firm, a Burger King or a Walmart.

According to a source close to Trader Joe's, the new stores planned for Georgia are: "in the Halcyon area of south Forsyth County, " "in the Peachtree City area," 2 to 3 "in the Atlanta area," and one "in the Decatur area."

Aside from the Halcyon phase two location, ToNeTo Atlanta is confident in its identification of at least two of the other sites including one near Decatur and another near Atlanta but are not publishing for now as we await confirmation.

If Trader Joe's does open in the above referenced locations, do you think Atlanta will have enough stores?  What potential upcoming Trader Joe's store are you most excited about?  What is your favorite Trader Joe's item?

Please share your thoughts below.

P.S. - If anyone from Trader Joe's sees this, please bring back the cinnamon babka!

When are they opening in the old Drug Emporium/Michaels on Piedmont by Miami Circle? When does Michaels move into the old Cubs/Bennies and Office Depot?

Anonymous said...

Near Decatur!!! πŸŽ‡πŸŽ‡πŸŽ†πŸŽ†πŸŽ†

Actually, the ALDI in the U.S. is not the same as the ALDI that operates Trader Joe's. They both stem from the same family business in Germany but split into two separate groups: ALDI Nord and ALDI SΓΌd. ALDI stores in the U.S. are run by ALDI SΓΌd, while Trader Joe's is operated by ALDI Nord. Despite their common origins, they function as distinct and independent entities today.

Anonymous said...

But many items are found in both stores just in different packages or labels

Anonymous said...

80% of TJ’s food is highly processed packaged products and high in salt, calories and fat

Anonymous said...

Hoping Braselton can snag them for a location.

Anonymous said...

Dunwoody will be a huge market

Anonymous said...

Rumors continue to abound that TJs will land at the Avenue Peachtree City. It will do well there.

Anonymous said...

Buford needs one!!

Anonymous said...

Woodstock or Canton need one

Anonymous said...

No one needs a Trader Joe’s. It is a fine store, but DMY.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely. Give me a Towne Lake or Bells Ferry location 😁

Anonymous said...

And it will make that already hellish intersection even worse

Anonymous said...

There isn’t enough parking at the Avenue. Besides the article said PTC area not in PTC. Won’t it be a hoot if Sharpsburg lands it instead of PTC?πŸ˜‚

Anonymous said...

We need one in Gwinnett!!! Lawrenceville or Duluth would be a hit!

Anonymous said...

Please dear lord open one in Lagrange. It will be a halfway point from Auburn and Atlanta. Lagrange is growing VERY fast with such a need for healthier options!

If the local politicians are able to keep a midrise apartment community away, I bet that Trader Joe’s comes to the Oglethorpe Publix location following their move to the Cambridge Square location. I know this whole community Can’t wait for Cambridge Square to be rebuilt up and opened with Publix. It looks like Based on a site map on the Regency centers website that the liquor store and one additional small store will be in its own building next to the drive-through pharmacy. Interestingly, while the site map looks to be very updated, it’s those shows Starbucks in that corner location where it formerly was located. I wonder if Starbucks is just taking a breather and will become part of the all new
Cambridge Square. So much thanks to our former district one Congress person Linley Jones for helping secure the future plans of Cambridge Square to include expanded retail instead of high density apartments. Especially with Linley not part of the leadership team I’m not sure they will be able to keep high density apartments away from Overthorpe however, if they do, I’d bet Trader Joe’s moves in. Lastly I second the motion for Trader Joe’s to bring back the cinnamon Babka! I personally like chocolate bapka , but cinnamon is great. Bagel licious on Johnson ferry in East Cobb has a good bapka , and they have a good challah!

Anonymous said...

Kennesaw or West Cobb please!!

Anonymous said...

TUCKER!!!

Anonymous said...

Please consider Valdosta, GA!

Anonymous said...

Absolutely no chance they’ll be in Lagrange. Their market requirements for them to even consider a location viable are way higher than Lagrange can provide. I’m glad to hear Lagrange is growing more and hopefully will clean up some of the rough areas.

Anonymous said...

We need one in West Cobb. It takes me 40 minutes to drive to the East Cobb location, which isn’t worth it to me. West Cobb would be a great location!!!

Anonymous said...

Yes please Decatur. Just not the city of Decatur, as traffic and parking will
Be an issue just like at Lennox and midtown.

Anonymous said...

Better place than the Avenue would be the old K-Mart or Steinmart locations. Fill an empty space!

Went to Trader Joes a few times. Never saw any reason to go back. I believe there's a huge percentage of the readers of this blog that simply are too lazy to cook. Always clamoring for fast food restaurants and places like TJs, where they can consume over salted garbage loaded with empty calories.

Anonymous said...

Yes! Would love it if they would come to the new Fischer Crossing shopping area across from Sam’s and Costco.

Anonymous said...

@ Anon December 18, 2023 at 6:39 PM Re: Dawsonville

Lidl had the corner where Olive Garden/Outback/Millers/Whataburger are under contract for over a year before they punted thinking that the great folks of Dawsonville weren't worth their time. I'll bet they regret that decision now.

Yes, West Cobb!!!

Anonymous said...

Braselton would be a prefect location. You have chΓ’teau across the street which is full of people who would love to shop at TJ’s! Not including all the new neighborhoods that are going in around the area.

Anonymous said...

Yes! Inquiring minds want to know.

Anonymous said...

If you choose to buy it. They offer a ton of unprocessed nuts, whole grains, oils, vegetables, personal grooming, eggs, dairy, etc... at the lowest prices in town. Those are mostly what I buy there. It's not their fault that many people like the less healthy stuff. All grocery stores offer lots of processed food.

Anonymous said...

I cook everything. I rarely eat pre-made food. I buy most produce at actual farmer's markets. TJ's is a great, affordable resource for basics (nuts, dairy, grains, oils, etc). If you cook, you still go to grocery stores, and they all offer processed foods.

Anonymous said...

Dawsonville doesn't have nearly the population density, or even the consumer taste, that a successful TJ's needs. Not an insult...I grew up there and all my family lives there still. They all think I cook weird food. Lol. Maybe Woodstock, though?

Anonymous said...

Buford, Lawrenceville, Braselton area!

Anonymous said...

I make a 45 minute drive to TJ about twice a month, I live the organic produce, frozen goods, flowers and so much more! I would love to have a TJ in Conyers! Please consider. There is an ALDIs, I prefer TJ. Please, please consider, Consider Conyers, GA.

CANTON PLEASE!

Canton Cherokee County .

Anonymous said...

Halcyon in Forsyth is NOT Alpharetta. I don't know why they insist on calling it that. It's a totally different zip code and different county than Alpharetta, which is in Fulton County.

That being said, I would love to see a Trader Joe's in actual Alpharetta, Milton or Johns Creek. The nearest one to these areas is down in Roswell. There is an Aldi up in Milton, but Trader Joe's is very different and would do well in this area.

Anonymous said...

Yes!! Go ahead and take over the Bed Bath & Beyond on Barrett....

Peachtree City would be great. Newnan would be even better.

Anonymous said...

Have they considered Gainesville or Dawsonville - we live in Gainesville & would welcome one up here. We have lived up here 22 years & it has grown in leaps & bounds. We sure have plenty of desirable property they could go into.
Dawsonville is really growing fast too. You wouldn’t believe construction up there either.
Years ago there was talk that TJ was coming to Gainesville but then all of a sudden we didn’t hear anymore about it. Instead we got Aldi which I like but TJ offers so much more.

Anonymous said...

Heard Braselton is getting one. Rumor only bcuz after talking to someone that would definitely know, no it’s not happening

Anonymous said...

City of Buford is in hall and Gwinnett county and further addresses do not constitute being in the city limits.

It’s how it is addressed w the usps

Anonymous said...

Please please we need one I. The Hamilton Mills area of Gwinnett county. We all have been waiting for years. Norcross and Athens are almost an hour for all of us

A TJ location on Scenic Hwy in Snellville would be awesome! It can replace the Bed, Bath & Beyond that went out of business. The area is booming and so many businesses have been coming to the area. Though that has caused more traffic on Hwy 124, I enjoy not having to go to the city for certain things.

Anonymous said...
