[EXCLUSIVE] Montreal Style Bagel Shop Planned For Buckhead Village

A new bagel shop is coming to Buckhead! Spread Bagelry is slated to open in a second generation restaurant space in Buckhead Village, according to planning documents reviewed by ToNeTo Atlanta.

The new bagel shop will open in the former Fire Hen at 47 Irby Avenue at its intersection with Cains Hill Place.  Locally owned Fire Hen debuted in what was then a new 2,830 square foot restaurant space in December 2020, but closed in early 2023 and has been vacant since.

Spread Bagelry got its start in Philadelphia in 2010 crafting Montreal-style wood-fired bagels and today has grown into a chain of 16 locations across 4 states, including one in Savannah, which opened last January.

The eatery specializes in bagel sandwiches be they with cream cheese or meats.  The shop will offered assorted cream cheese options including Plain, Scallion and Pistachio Honey as well as meats from New York's Carnegie Deli.

For those unfamiliar, the Montreal-style bagel is a distinctive variety of wood-fired baked bagel.  In contrast to the New York-style bagel (like those at Goldberg's, Brooklyn Bagel, and Bagelicious), which also contain sourdough, the Montreal-style bagel is typically smaller, thinner, denser, and sweeter, given that it is boiled in honey-sweetened water before being baked.  The Montreal bagel also typically has a larger hole.

ToNeTo Atlanta readers may recall that Buckhead almost landed another Montreal-style bagel shop - The Good Wurst - which was to open at Tuxedo Festival near Chastain Park, but the plans fell through and MEND Coffee & Goods opened in the space last April.

Are you familiar with Montreal-style bagels?  Have you been to Spread Bagelry?  What is your favorite bagel flavor?

  3. I give this six months. The only people that go to buckhead anymore are criminals and liberals (guess the two have many things in common). Most of the restaurant dollars and customers are outside the perimeter. If this was opening in cumming or kennesaw I could see it being successful

  5. I'm sure it'll be out of business within a few months. Sooner or later, the Trump tariffs and the Trump Depression and the Trump economy will kill off everything

    1. When you open up a restaurant that sells exactly what YOU think a restaurant should sell. Go do it! Since you’re so bored and so smart go do it. Then it can be announced here and everyone can tell YOU “it won’t make it” “this is stupid” “tarriffs will ruin it” and everyone’s favorite, the guy who posts the buffoonish mocking can say it needs hookah. Go on, do it!

    3. $8 bagels will be a big hit in Buckhead. Buck'ers love to pay 3x what something actually should cost. Imagine a tasty piece of Montreal dough with a chive schmear for the low price of $12.74. Add a latte' for $6.95 and you've got a tasty treat for lesss than $20.... Well, maybe a little more with tip.

    4. Schmear is racist, you philistine.

    1. I appreciate your readership and understand your concern. There are plenty of comments that are not published but some I feel are worthy given they show both sides. One could say any political comment is left by "an idiot" depending on which side you lie.
