[EXCLUSIVE] Shake Shack Scores Space in Suburban Shopping Center

With three new locations already in the works for Georgia, Shake Shack is preparing to sink its teeth into another metro community.

The popular burger joint which this past June opened a new location at The Battery Atlanta and will soon open a new Store Support Center at the project, too, is planning to add to its growing metro Atlanta presence with a restaurant in East Cobb.

The new Shake Shack is planned for an outparcel (1281 Johnson Ferry Road) of the Kohl's and Whole Foods anchored Merchants Walk.  Specifically, Shake Shack will backfill the former Duck Donuts and the current Mirko Pasta, according to documents reviewed by ToNeTo Atlanta.  The combined restaurant would measure about 3,600 square feet.

Duck Donuts closed in their 1,350 square foot space this past August after six years in business.  Mirko is still open and operating but has been repeatedly listed for sale in recent years.

The new Shake Shack would be situated opposite an existing Chipotle in the freestanding multi-suite outparcel.

In East Cobb, Shake Shack joins Five Guys in East Cobb Crossing shopping center, Wendy's on Johnson Ferry across from Merchants Walk and Moxie Burger in Paper Mill Village as burger options in the area.

ToNeTo Atlanta reported in late August that Shake Shack is also opening a new restaurant along Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw which will give the chain a coveted drive-thru lane.  Another drive-enabled Shake Shack is coming to Athens where it will replace a short-lived Gusto on Alps Road.  Shake Shack is also expected to open a new restaurant on Centennial Olympic Park Drive as part of upcoming Centennial Yards project in Downtown Atlanta.

Shake Shack, which got its start as a food cart in New York's Madison Square Park in 2004, has today grown into a publicly traded company with about 400 locations across the country and more than 600 worldwide.  The company has said it plans to one day have at least 1,500 globally.

In metro Atlanta, Shake Shack currently operates nine units: Buckhead Village District and Lenox Square in Buckhead, Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody, EDGE on the Atlanta BeltLine in Old Fourth Ward, Concourse A of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Alpharetta Crossing in Alpharetta, Piedmont Park in Midtown, at Westside Provisions District in West Midtown and their newest at The Battery Atlanta.

Are you excited for the planned opening of Shake Shack in East Cobb?  Where else would you like to see Shake Shack open?  What is your "go to" spot for a casual burger (or veggie burger) in metro Atlanta?

  1. You forgot to mention the Original fast food burger chain, McDonalds, as a burger option in the area.

  2. So was Duck Donuts forced out of business because of this? Seems like they did want to or were planning to close.

  3. I wish 5 guys would close and shake shack would take over that location instead. A drive thru would be nice. 5 guys close already ... If not SS then close and replace it with an A&W, Burger King, Sonic, checker's, Bonchon Korean chicken, Culver's or Fazoli's ... Just close already! 🙏

    2. If any of those places wanted to open, they'd find a place to open. They don't need 5 Guys to go out of business. There's other real estate. It's funny how many people are so quick to offer suggestions. It's as if all these places are just waiting for 1 location to close to open...

    1. Yes!!! Where’s “Cel’ry Shack” that’s what needs to open. All celery, lettuce, green beans and carrots. Steamed or raw, no salt, lemon juice is the only condiment. The lines will wrap around the building!! What are you waiting for?

  6. It's Moxie Burger, not Movie Burger. Gee wiz, do your homework.

    2. Yes, they are saying its not true and they operate at regular hours daily. They also want you to patronize their establishment.

  10. Hey y’all! I’m a server at Mirko. This information is completely wrong and is already negatively affecting us. We are not closing ! We are open! Why would you make such an inaccurate statement like this ? This is unprofessional and just embarrassing.

  11. I can’t believe that it would be announced without it happening. Maybe Mirko is just going on until the end of the year with their regular hours. Shake Shack could buy them out for very little and new owner of the Mirko East Cobb, I believe it sold recently, would recoup his money and have still have enough to start his next project.

  12. Shake Shack is the most overrated burger chain, awful burgers. Would rather have In-N-Out.

  13. This is.terrible news. I tried Shake Shit once, neither burger nor shake were worth the health cost of indulging in red meat and ice cream. Immediately regretted eating it. Big corporations gobble up retail space and ram this crap down peoples gullible throats. But more importantly Mirko’s is a small, regional restaurant business and a very well mannered one, fresh hand made pasta, quiet atmosphere, great service. I feel violated. Shame on everyone that allowed this to happen.

    1. Shame on them all!!! Everyone who reads this should have eaten three times a week at Mirko since they opened, no excuses! Everyone who didn’t do that should be ashamed. Just as ashamed as they should be if they peed on the sidewalk out front of the restaurant and an old lady saw it and fainted. Shameful shame!

  14. How much did shake shake buy Mirko out for? Mirko was for sale for 300k so shake shack didn’t have to spend all that much to buy them out and takeover the lease

  15. Why would Shake Shack want to go in this spot. It isn't on a main road or at a mall.

    1. Not on a main road? Traffic counts show 30,000-40,000 cars per day.

    2. They aren’t!! Mirko is staying open!!!!!!!!!

  16. Turns out we just got updated information from management — Miracle’s Pasta is closing after all. I had defended us earlier because we hadn’t been told yet. Sorry for the confusion, and thank you to those who were just sharing the news accurately.
