[ALERT] The Bell Tolls For Nearly 50-Year-Old Atlanta Taco Spot

A longstanding Taco Bell franchise in southwest Atlanta has closed after nearly fifty years in business.  The freestanding Taco Bell was located in an outparcel of The Mall at West End at 545 Lee Street and reportedly closed permanently in recent days.

Fulton County tax records indicate that the former Taco Bell was 2,370 square feet, sat on a roughly .6 acre parcel, and was built in 1980.

Interestingly, City of Atlanta permits reflect more than $400,000 in permits for renovations and improvements at the quick-serve restaurant between July 2013 and November 2024.

A massive redevelopment of The Mall at West End first announced in 2024 is expected to begin "soon" and bring with it a $450 million mixed-use development in place of the dated and underutilized 12 acre mall property.

Despite the West End closure, new corporately owned Taco Bell locations have opened in recent months in Calhoun, Cumming, Carrollton, Covington, Jefferson, and Greensboro, while others in Sandy Springs and Brookhaven have been partially or fully rebuilt and updated by a growing franchisee.

A source close to the restaurant suggests that several more locations in the greater metro Atlanta area are "under consideration" by the Irvine, California-based brand.

Are you surprised to see Taco Bell close in the West End?  Are you excited about the planned redevelopment of the mall property?  What is your favorite quick serve restaurant?
