The owners of Solar Slice pizza in Marietta are planning to open a second location in the coming months. Zachary Wyatt and his wife opened the first Solar Slice at 497 Cobb Parkway on May 5, 2024.
After a car drove into the business this past March and the restaurant was forced to limit its service, a subsequent visit from Dave Portnoy in May catapulted the restaurant to viral stardom.
Portnoy through his "One Bite Pizza Reviews," gave Solar Slice a solid 7.9 rating, but after Wyatt sought feedback on the difference between a 7.9 and 8+, a follow-up visit yielded an 8.1 rating of the newly christened "Portnoy" pie.
Solar Slice, which all along claimed to have "the best pizza on the planet," saw out of this world sales following its rave reviews and solid rating from Portnoy. The restaurant has a stellar overall 4.8 star rating in Google with more than 2,000 reviews.
The restaurant features both pizza pies and pizza slices with 10" gluten free pizzas offered too.
Wyatt, who relocated to metro Atlanta for the film and television industry, found himself out of a job in 2023 when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the actors' union (SAG-AFTRA) went on strike. After sharpening his pizza skills working at Fellini's, Wyatt struck out on his own with his Marietta restaurant.
The current location, formerly home to longtime Marietta pizza shop Baby Tommy's Taste of New York, features not only pizzas, but pinball and other games too. The 2,400 square foot restaurant dates from 1958 and is located just south of South Marietta Parkway, across from Piccadilly Cafeteria, not far from The Big Chicken.
The new Solar Slice, which Wyatt has hinted at in recent social media posts, will be located in East Cobb where it will again replace another former pizza shop. This time around, however, it will be a larger and newer space.
Solar Slice East Cobb will be located in Sandy Plains MarketPlace where it will replace what was originally a MOD Pizza in a 2,800 square foot endcap space. MOD opened in what was then a GreenWise Market by Publix-anchored shopping center in 2020, but following the grocer's closure in December 2021, MOD closed in July 2024.
The roughly 25,000 square foot anchor space remains vacant, but Solar Slice will join several other restaurants that have remained in the center including Bad Daddy's Burger Bar, Jim 'N Nick's, Panda Express, and First Watch.
Several other MOD Pizza locations around metro Atlanta (and across the country) have closed, with the East Cobb location marking the first time locally that an independent (non franchise) restaurant will take their space.
The former MOD in Sandy Springs is now Brooklyn Bagel while the former MOD in Cumming became a Five Guys. In Buford MOD became a Dave's Hot Chicken. ToNeTo Atlanta was first to report in 2025 that the former MOD in Chamblee is slated to become Georgia's first Potbelly, while the former MOD in Dawsonville is becoming a First Watch. MOD continues to operate in Decatur and Kennesaw, for now.
