Cook-Out is Coming to Atlanta! ... Inside The Perimeter!

Cook-Out is coming ITP!

North Carolina-based Cook-Out is coming to (the city of) Atlanta.

The casual burger chain, which recently opened a location in Statesboro by Georgia Southern University, and has two others coming soon in Athens and Augusta, will next open inside the perimeter.  The new Cook-Out restaurant will open in place of the shuttered Hooks Seafood & Chicken (originally a Mrs. Winner's Chicken & Biscuits) on Moreland Avenue in East Atlanta, just off I-20.

The Cook-Out restaurant will be roughly 3500 square feet with plans to utilize at least some of the current structure.  Renovations should begin in mid-to-late October, with the restaurant likely opening early next year.  Cook-Out's menu consists largely of burgers, hotdogs and chicken "cooked outdoors style," North Carolina BBQ, fries and over 35 flavors of milkshakes.  Yearlong flavors like "Orange Push Up" and "Banana Pineapple" are among the more interesting milkshake flavors, while seasonal options like "Fresh Watermelon" (July & August) and "Fresh Egg Nog" (December) are also very popular.

Cook-Out has a cult-like following, and with this being the chain's first location in the city of Atlanta, expect great fanfare for this location.  Athens-based Zaxby's, which up until recently had no presence intown, has seen tremendous customer traffic in their new Ponce de Leon location.  I've driven by Zaxby's Ponce a few late nights, and I mean 2 am late, and there is a line around the building of customers waiting in the drive-thru.

Cook-Out does have some burger competition in the area with national players Checkers, Krystal, Wendy's and McDonald's, each within a few blocks of the planned Cook-Out.

Are you excited to have Cook-Out open in Atlanta?  Where would you like to see them open next? If you have been to a Cook-Out, what is your favorite menu item?  Please share your thoughts below.

I was just at Cook-Out in Statesboro this past weekend for the first time. The first thing I noticed was how cheap everything was on the menu. I got a hot dog ($.99), 12 hushpuppies for a $1, and a reese's cup milk shake for less than $3. The hot dog tasted better than one off my Big Green Egg. As bad as fast-food restaurants and chains can be, they serve a purpose. I think it will do well in that area.

I went to college in NC. Let me say this is the greatest day in my life.....

Can someone shed some light on this location choice? East Atlanta off 20? Isn't that basically alienating the hordes of hungry, SUV-driving whites in midtown, Buckhead, and Sandy Springs who are afraid to venture south of 20?

Burger tray Cookout style of course. Hush pups and cheese fries! It's always a tough choice between a few shakes for me. Went to school in NC. I may not make as many 3am trips but I will definitely add it to my list of restaurants worth the trip.

Hopefully we'll see their NC style BBQ sandwiches and plates on the GA menu.

I sort of agree with nsk (minus the gratuitous stereotyping). They have chosen an odd location given their history of locating near colleges.

They can stay above the I-20 wall if they're that scared. They can bask in the hype of their preciously overrated Shake Shack that's coming to Buckhead.

Understand that they have a location in Rome, GA under contract as well. Good college town. They should do really well there.

Thank you God!

This location wasn't a former Mrs Winners. This location was a former KFC/Taco Bell.

@Anon RE: KFC / Taco Bell,

I'm not sure to what building you are referring but I can tell you with 100% certainty that the new Cook-Out is coming to 403 Moreland Avenue. This address was previously home to a Mrs. Winner's.

Thanks for your comments and readership.

Any idea when they will be opening?

Atlantan99 said...

@Anon RE" opening,

No, I'm sadly not aware of an expected opening. Cook-Out is very secretive and is more likely to pop the doors open than announce an opening.

Thanks for reading!

Hey, here's another way to look at it: Maybe they're serving all the people south of I-20 who want a good cheap place to get a burger. Maybe if they located in Midtown or Buckhead they'd be alienating these people. Like many other businesses do.

On behalf of the unwashed hordes south of I-20, let me say that we also possess this quality you call "hunger." And we can also use your metal bits and green paper to buy 99 cent hot dogs.

It's right next to Delia's & sandwiched between two Zestos & assorted big chain fast food. They're all busy all the time. There's room for another.

I'm so freaking excited to hear this. I went to school up in the Carolinas and Cook-Out was by far my favorite fast food restaurant! This place is going to do so well in Atlanta! I'll be there every week, re-living the college days.

They are working on building 2 and one will be nearer to midtown

Got an e-mail from their corporate site. Two will be opening in Atlanta. One in April, the other in June. I drove by the Moreland Ave. location today and it looks like that will be the one opening in April.

I take it that you have not visited Little Five Points either. If you have, this Moreland location is not that far, by car, from that. I have been in the Edgewood-Candler Park area for over a year and I don't fear being here.

I'm from NC and I hate that I have to go back home or to SC for CookOut!!! I am so excited I can hardly sit down!!! They are about to get all of my money!!! Its cheap and it's delicious, what more can I ask for? I just hope that the bbq is Carolina style and not GA style, because I hate GA pulled pork!!

Sked dont get fed! Haha! Its right off hhe exit.

lol @ someone saying they're a %100 sure about something & be completely wrong. Kind of reminds me of the women on Maury. Trust me I grew up off of moreland ave that was definitely a Mrs. Winners but on to the news about CookOut. I feel like I hit the loto, I visited NC a year ago & this has been my favorite place to eat that I had no apparent access to...

There are tons of NC A&T Aggies in Atlanta salivating and waiting for the ribbon cutting! Please stay true to NC and keep "Cookout Style" on the GA menu. It's time to show the world how to put coleslaw on EVERYTHANG!

A location in the Northwest would be great. Cobb county by Cumberland Mall. Get started before the new Braves stadium goes up.

Wrong ass,it was formerly Mrs winners idiot

Omg I'm so EXCITED. Nasty Krystal's, Checkers, and McDonalds will have nothing on COOKOUT!!! I'm from Charlotte Nc and this is the best place ever♡

Anonymous said...

Really don't understand the hype. Food is cheap but rather tasteless. The burgers and chicken nuggets remind me of public school cafeteria food, and honestly, it's more expensive than that. On the plus side, excellent sweet tea. I'd give it a 2/5 so far.

Anonymous said...

If you value your weight size DON'T GO THERE TOO OFTEN! The food is entirely too cheap to be that good :( Jesus take the wheel.

Finally something cool to try on my end of town. Funny how they say it's blocks from Krystal (right next door) and Checkers (right across the street and Wendy's (right next to Krystal) and McDonald's (right next to Wendy's). Is that why these fast food places recently got makeovers? Hot dogs are my favorite meat and I will be in to check it out this weekend.

WOW! love Cookout, only wish one would open in Biloxi Mississippi. Near Gulf Coast , Casinos like Harrah's. Golden Nugget, Treasure Bay, Hard Rock, Palace, Imperial Palace, Beau Rivage and more. Plus Biloxi is building a baseball stadium downtown and we all know the saying, "If you build it they will come.! Can I open a franchise?

Just ate at this place. Excellent food and the prices can't be beat. To the person who made the "south of I 20" comment: You sound like my aging baby boomer parents who think that anything inside 285 is dangerous. East Atlanta has been hip for over a decade. Get out more.:-)

What's wrong with you? Why do you think that East Atlanta is not a good place? This place is a hop, skip and a jump from Little five points. There is crime in Sandy Spring, and Buckhead or do you not read the news. Stop stereotyping, crime does not discriminate. The subject was Cookout food which is great!!!
