Bits & Bites

Goodwill of North Georgia will celebrate the Grand Opening of its new store on Lawrenceville Highway in Decatur next week.  The store, donation center, and career center were built in place of the former Cub Foods grocery store at North DeKalb Square.

Retailer Club Monaco plans to open a new location at the Westside Provisions District.  The store will open in a newly created corner suite, occupying former suites A101 and A102 The two spaces it will occupy were formerly home to Crafted Westside, which has since relocated to 1000 Marietta Street near Bocado, and Le Jardin Francais, which recently relocated to an adjacent suite. Club Monaco completed a significant renovation and slight expansion of its Lenox Square store in 2012.  In addition to its Lenox Square location, the New York-based retailer recently opened a women's only store on Broughton Street in Savannah.  Well placed sources indicate that like J. Crew's Westside location, the upcoming Club Monaco will also be a women's only location.  Given the softness of retail sales on the westside, I find their opening a bit perplexing.  Club Monaco was launched in Canada in 1985, and was acquired by Ralph Lauren in 1999.

Atwoods Pizza Cafe, which is located in The Biltmore on the corner of West Peachtree and 6th Streets, has opened its doors.  Atwoods offers dine in, grab-and-go, and delivery for breakfast, lunch and dinner - seven days a week.   A collaboration by restaurateurs Bill Streck, Rob Caswick, Jeff Newsham and Dave Pazienza, Atwoods features Neapolitan style pizza.  Among other ventures, Caswick, Newsham and Pazienza are also partners in Hearth Pizza Tavern in Sandy Springs and were also partners in the failed Artuzzi's Italian Kitchen.

Pecola, a women's boutique that opened last year at Inman Quarter, has closed. The 940 square foot boutique reportedly closed over a week ago but has seemingly maintained an online presence via their website, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Bealls Outlet is planning a new store in Stone Mountain at Stone Mountain Square.  The off-price retailer will occupy a 20,000 square foot space to the right of Marshalls, formerly home to America's Kids.  Another new Bealls Outlet will be opening soon in a former Old Navy in Athens Promenade in Athens on Atlanta Highway.  Other metro Atlanta Bealls locations include Austell, Kennesaw, Marietta and Hiram.

A third AC Hotels by Marriott has been announced for metro Atlanta.  The Spanish chain with seven U.S. locations, will see properties open in Buckhead, midtown and downtown over the next couple of years.  In Buckhead, the ground-up hotel is nearing completion at the corner of Wieuca and Peachtree Roads, adjacent to Phipps Plaza.  In midtown, the AC will be part of a dual Marriott-branded hotel project slated to rise on a parking lot between 13th and 14th streets next to the Four Seasons hotel. The project will include about 300 rooms. On 14th Street, the AC Hotel will rise ten stories, while on 13th Street a five-story Moxy Hotel — Marriott's new Millennial-oriented brand, will sit atop six floors of parking. The latest AC Hotels property will open downtown, where currently the Holiday Inn Atlanta Downtown - Centennial Park operates.  Plans call for the hotel on Andrew Young International Boulevard, to be fully renovated and reopen under the AC Hotels flag.  The downtown property would be the first AC in the market from a conversion rather than a new build.

A new Steak & Shake is planned for Market Place Boulevard in Locust Grove. The roughly  3,500 square foot restaurant should break ground shortly and open before the end of the year.

Metro Atlanta's newest Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers recently opened in the Sugarloaf Marketplace in Duluth. Wichita, Kansas-based Freddy's has four locations in Georgia: Duluth, Athens, Conyers and McDonough and has locations coming soon to Snellville and Warner Robins.

The former Ledbetter Roofing building on Cheshire Bridge Road has been demolished to make way for a new approximately 6,900 square foot Advance Auto Parts.  I first reported on this development last summer, but only recently has the land been cleared for the new development. The store should open by early fall.

Atlanta's first Cinnaholic location is targeting a May 1st opening in the Edgewood Retail District.  ToNeTo Atlanta was first in Atlanta to report on the shop's planned opening this past January, when at the time they were already slightly delayed in opening.  The space Cinnaholic will occupy was formerly a clothing boutique and is adjacent to Willy's Mexicana Grill.

A new local coffee shop called The Corner Cup has quietly opened just up the road from the new Goodwill.  Located behind Pea Ridge Restaurant, at the corner of McLendon Drive and Lawrenceville Highway, The Corner Cup has been open about a week but will celebrate its Grand Opening April 30th.  The Corner Cup replaced Elements of Art Hair Gallery which relocated to 1st Avenue in Tucker earlier this year.

Honestly, I don't see how many of these women's boutiques survive, especially where there is a concentration of them in a specific center (looking at you, Town Brookhaven). I am surprised the one in Inman Quarter failed though. That area has a high concentration of women (just look at the patios at Bartaco, Barcelona, and Beetlecat) and the new yoga/barre studio receives a lot of traffic from what I have seen.

Club Monaco needs a better name - feels too...clubby and that's not a good fit on that side of town with the likes of J Crew and Billy Reid, even if the clothing can be similar.
