[UPDATE] Fifth Group Goes For Seconds at Terminus With Asian Concept "Yum Chow"

ToNeTo Atlanta has learned that not only will Fifth Group Restaurants open a second location of their popular modern Mexican restaurant Alma Cocina at Terminus 100, but they will also open a new concept, Yum Chow, an Asian eatery.  Both restaurants will be in Terminus 100 at the corner of Piedmont and Peachtree Roads in Buckhead.

ToNeTo Atlanta first got wind of plans for Yum Chow last fall, at which time representatives of the restaurant indicated that plans were still fluid and that an projected opening date was undetermined.

Sources close to Fifth Group indicate that Yum Chow will be the group's first quick-serve concept and is also the group's first stab at Asian fare.  Those same sources tell ToNeTo Atlanta that the restaurant will feature a primarily "South Asian" menu, but will offer other Asian dishes as well.

The idea for Yum Chow has been in the works for well over a year and is a testament to Fifth Group and Terminus owner Cousins' long, successful relationship.

The original Alma Cocina, which opened in place of failed New York Italian eatery Il Mulino at Downtown's 191 Peachtree building in late 2011, was then a Cousins owned property, and 3350 Peachtree, where South City Kitchen made its Buckhead debut in 2016, was then, and is now, a Cousins owned property.

“We’ve had the pleasure of working with Fifth Group Restaurants to open the original Alma Cocina concept at 191 Peachtree, as well as South City Kitchen Buckhead on Peachtree Road,” Larry Gellerstedt, then Chief Executive Officer, and now Executive Chairman of Cousins Properties said in early 2018 when Alma's Buckhead debut was formally announced. “Fifth Group is a proven operator with an exemplary twenty five-year track record of delivering some of the most successful restaurants in the city, and we’re thrilled to work with their team on this project.”

Alma Cocina will open in the roughly 7,000 square foot space previously occupied by Bricktop's, while Yum Chow will open in the remaining portion of the adjacent former Amura/MF Sushi space, a roughly 2,500 square foot space. [Starbucks opened in 2015 in a 2,100 square foot Peachtree Road facing portion of the former sushi space.]

Materials indicate that including inside as well as planned patio and mezzanine options, Yum Chow will provide seating for roughly 100 patrons.

Fifth Group Restaurants, which last year celebrated 25 years in business, operates a number of concepts throughout the city and even in the suburbs and at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.  The group's concepts include Ecco (Midtown & Buckhead), El Taco (Virginia Highland & Hartsfield), La Tavola (Virginia Highland), Lure (Midtown), South City Kitchen (Midtown, Buckhead, Smyrna, Avalon & Hartsfield) and Bold Catering & Design.

Design firm ASD | Sky, whose previous Atlanta area work includes South City Kitchen Buckhead, Seven Lamps at Shops Around Lenox in Buckhead, and Mailchimp's headquarters at Ponce City Market, among other projects, is handing the design of both new restaurants at Terminus.

Alma Cocina and Yum Chow represent Fifth Group's third and fourth Buckhead area concepts following the 2016 debut of South City Kitchen and 2018 opening of Ecco at Phipps Plaza.  Sources close to the group tell ToNeTo Atlanta that Buckhead could very well see more

In light of massive delays in both permitting and construction, it's likely that one of the two restaurants could open late this fall while the other will likely not make its debut until early 2020.

Are you excited for the opening of Alma Cocina and Yum Chow in Buckhead?  What is your favorite Fifth Group concept?  What upcoming Buckhead area development/restaurant are you most looking forward to?
