[EXCLUSIVE] Big B's Fish Joint To Drop Anchor in Sandy Springs, Plans to Open This Fall

A new restaurant called Big B's Fish Joint is coming soon to Sandy Springs.  The new fast-casual restaurant, which promises "genuine reel food," is opening in place of Verde Taqueria which closed at Gateway Sandy Springs along Roswell Road last July
The restaurant is not a revival of the similarly named defunct drug store owned by Bruno's Supermarkets, instead, planning documents indicate that Barry Mills, co-founder of both FLIP Burger Boutique and HD1, is behind the new seafood eatery.  Both the burger and hot dog joints were opened in partnership with chef Richard Blais, but the chef is not involved in the new endeavor.

Mills previously partnered with design firm ai3 in creating both FLIP and HD1, but enlisted Ed Seiber of Seiber Design for Big B's.  Seiber's restaurant work includes Upbeet in West Midtown, Scout in Decatur, Aria in Buckhead and Verde Taqueria in Sandy Springs, among others in metro Atlanta and around the south.

After growing the FLIP brand for several years, Mills closed a number of local and out-of-state outposts of the budding chain including those in Buckhead (still vacant), Poncey-Highland and Nashville.  Last July, Mills sold the last remaining Atlanta area FLIP Burger to brothers Joseph and Matthew Hsiao,  owners of Candler Park and Midtown outposts of Flying Biscuit Cafe.  This past December, the last remaining out-of-state Flip closed at The Summit in Birmingham.

Recently installed signage indicates that plans call for the restaurant to open later this fall.  If that happens, Big B's will be the second of three replacement restaurants to open in the mixed-use development.  Santorini Taverna, a Greek eatery, opened this past January in place of Cheeky, a Mexican eatery, which closed last September.  ToNeTo Atlanta was first to report in May that Colorado-based Snooze an A.M. Eatery is entering the market, too, with its first location set to open next spring in place of Urban Cookhouse, which closed in the project earlier this spring.

Real estate sources indicate that Mills has been working on this concept for several months and looked at opening it within at least one other intown community.

Interior restaurant elements envisioned by Seiber Design
Little is known about Big B's, but the restaurant does have  a limited website, Instagram and facebook page (created over a year ago) up that hint at the both the concept and the design.  We reached out to Mills but have not thus far  received a response.

If done well, Big B's could find success where others like Boneheads, which once had a dozen or so locations including one in Chastain Park and S&W Seafood, which didn't last long in its revival attempt in Johns Creek, have not.

Are you excited for a quick-serve seafood eatery in Sandy Springs?  What is your favorite seafood eatery in metro Atlanta? What type of restaurant do you feel is most missing in Chastain Park / south Sandy Springs?

North Buckhead / South Sandy Spgs still needs a simple tavern, where we could get a cold beer and a reasonable cheeseburger.
