Flying Biscuit East Cobb Closes Abruptly , Roswell Opening Soon

The Flying Biscuit on Johnson Ferry Road in East Cobb closed abruptly last week, and already all of the signage has been removed. One of the first franchised locations to open after Raving Brands purchased the business from founder Delia Champion, the location was built as a Donatos Pizza but later was failed Raving Brands concept, Mama Fu's Asian House. Recently the business was listed for sale on Atlanta Restaurant Exchange but it seems no buyer was found and alas it simply closed. I have heard from internal sources that the Flying Biscuit concept is in trouble but this closure was still not
expected.

Another interesting note is that according to a separate source, J. Christopher's, The Flying Biscuit's main competitor, is in talks to buy back all their locations from existing franchisees in an attempt to maintain consistency among other initiatives. The original Flying Biscuit locations in Candler Park and in Midtown were sold last month by Raving Brands to a local restaurateur who also owns a number of Chinese eateries. A few locations have popped up in North Carolina, and one in Gainesville, Florida, but Atlanta remains their largest market. Local franchisee Barbara Juhan, who opened a location in Sandy Springs last year, will open a second in Roswell / Alpharetta next month. Hoping that customers will make the drive or tell friends, numerous signs (like the one pictured) were posted at the vacated East Cobb location alerting customers to the existing location in Sandy Springs and the upcoming eatery in Roswell.

It seems like the scaling up of the Flying Biscuit isn't going as smoothly as they once thought.

I'm 99% sure that location is going to be a freestanding Chase bank. Easy decision for Flying Biscuit to terminate their lease, especially if they received a check (key money) to terminate in order to make way for Chase. Great blog BTW!

Hello Palmer Bayless,

You are correct that there was a lease buyout offered to the franchisee and that they accepted it. Chase opening in the space is significant possibility though I have yet to have that confirmed.

Thanks for reading and for the kind words on the site!

I am writing on behalf of The Flying Biscuit Cafe and would like to provide some clarification regarding your questions. The Flying Biscuit Café closed the Johnson Ferry store after the previous franchisee failed to reach the Flying Biscuit’s full potential. The landlord offered a lease buyout and the company accepted. The Flying Biscuit Café locations in Candler Park and Midtown were bought by Joseph and Matt Hsaio, brothers who live in Atlanta and have an affinity for one of Atlanta’s favorite home-grown brands. The Flying Biscuit Café has plans to expand the brand throughout the Southeast. Recently, The Flying Biscuit Café finalized a deal in Fort Lauderdale to open three stores. The Flying Biscuit Café has plans to expand throughout Atlanta including the Roswell store planned to open in June by Barbara Juhan, who opened a store in Sandy Springs last year. Stores are also planned to open in the Brookhaven and Downtown areas. Charlotte has also proved to be a strong market for The Flying Biscuit Café. Charlotte franchisee Hugh Bigham opened his second store in March. In addition, The Flying Biscuit Café is currently exploring opportunities in the Memphis market.

@Flying Biscuit Cafe:

In the off chance you make it back here, do you have an ETA on the Brookhaven restaurant?

Thanks!
