Deckard's Kitchen & Kegs On Tap In Midtown

Matthew Deckard, Corporate Chef at Taco Mac, is getting a new restaurant named in his honor. Chef Deckard has been with Taco Mac since 2005, before which he spent 5 years at Metrotainment's Garrison's Broiler & Tap as its executive chef. With the original Taco Mac not far away in Virginia Highlands, Deckard's Kitchen & Kegs will be the second concept launched by the same owners. Operated by the Tappan Street Restaurant Group, the parent company of Taco Mac, Deckard's Kitchen & Kegs is to open in early September, although I know little about their menu or concept as yet. According to their Facebook page,

"Deckard's Kitchen and Kegs is a casual concept with a vintage tavern appeal. We will be serving craft food, craft beer and artisan liquors with seasonal menus and features. We will always use local produce when available."

Located at 650 Ponce de Leon Avenue, the restaurant is closest to the street within the Whole Foods and Home Depot shopping center. Taking space that had most recently been Matsuri Japanese Restaurant, Deckard's is on the second level, above Qdoba and Mattress Firm. I think the second level space will be tough, and even with City Hall East currently across the street, crime is a problem, but if anyone can make a go of it, the Tappan Street team can. What do you think? Another hit on their hands or bound for the DeathWatch?

Great scoop as always, Eli! Very interesting that Tappan thinks their chef deserves recognition for the incredibly limited, low-quality menu. And somehow we'd want more of that?! We shall see. Will be great to at least see something going into that long-vacant space. FYI, City Hall East is history, making for an even sketchier vibe now that it's vacant and fenced off.

A nice tavern within walking distance to my house is long overdue! I've been there since 2005 and although we've had a couple of great restaurants pop up (4th & Swift and the now-gone Repast) I have bemoaned the lack of a real "neighborhood drinking establishment" for the last 5 years. I have high hopes for this place, as, I'm sure, do many in the neighborhood. With the ample parking available, and the lack of local competition, I think this could be a very successful venture unless they totally screw it up.

A "real neighborhood drinking establishment?" What, The Local not good enough?

I'm excited too - nice to have another food spot in the "hood."

IN THE GHETTO...

Horrible location for a concept like this. They would've been better off with the original plan to be in Brookhaven near Verde and Haven.

I agree that this location is not ideal whatsoever. I personally love Taco Mac's dedication to beer, but think their food is terrible, even by chain restaurant/bar food standards. If anybody has ever gone to one of TM's beer dinners, I'm assuming this is what they're trying to replicate. The dinners sell out rather fast with about 40 slots going for $40-60 dollars each. Now if only they can get those 40 people to come out weekly, they might have some success, but again the location's not a good idea. This would've served better in Vinings, Brookwood, L5P, in my opinion.

I hope the food is more along the taste and quality of The Fred.
If Chef does beer dinners here, perhaps he will actually taste the brews with the food instead of reading tasting notes and hoping he doesn't crap out when he rolls the dice on the dinner table.

I am disappointed to hear so many people think my neighbourhood is a ghetto. I love this area. Eats so close by, gets all my lunch needs taken care of but now i'd love a nice evening eatery - please just have a nice veggie plate / salad option my Deckard!
